subdomain (only) hosting question

A friend is hosting a domain. (HalcyonRules.com)

I need to host a subdomain on a different host. (Imsocool.HalcyonRules.com)

What do I need to do?

Does he use my host's DNS servers for the subdomain?

Does his DNS point to my servers?

???

Thanks!

whatever dns halcyonrules.com is using -- just create an "A Record" for the subdomain to point to the IP of wherever the subdomain is being hosted.

Is that even possible? Since the original domain is already assigned to a particular host, I would think the subdomain would have to be hosted there as well? I could be wrong as the situation has never arisen... maybe redirect the subdomain's main page to the intended target?

Anywho, here be a bump...

cool!

So, if I want to host the subdomain on dreamhost (I know I know) then I need to find out my server IP from dreamhost and give it to my friend?

Then just set up a directory for that subdomain?

(sorry, tech things make my brain hurt.)

(I should clarify that I do NOT touch anything hosting or domain related for FLASHCA$H sites. This is a personal project question.)

yes, just ask dreamhost what IP you should point the subdomain too. then setup that subdomain on your hosting account there. it has to be setup as a domain on dreamhost and be configured in apache. so just add it as a domain to your account, or have them add it to your account and make the base directory the one you specify.

not "server ip", but the ip for that particular subdomain...
(after adding subdomain just click on the "DNS" link next to the subdomain at dreamhost, and use the ip you see there)
then you need to contact the other host to add new A record like TidalWave has said...

hmmm. it looks like it won't let me add the subdomain of a domain I don't control.

add the domain first, then subdomain...
(the domain will just sit there, not doing anything, it will still be hosted at the other host)
