Kettlebell Training: Anyone Do This?

I've started to read up on kettlebell training as it looks to be an ideal solution for my particular living situation. I don't want to buy a bunch of weights, and it's quite difficult to get to the gym. It seems like having one or two kettlebells would be optimal in terms of storage space (and price), and if I move again then I can take them with me without much difficulty.

I'm curious if anyone here has had first-hand experiences with kettlebell training. Just another fad? Good way to work out? Give up and be a fatty for the rest of your life? Thanks! :thumbsup

No clue.

Though if you go to the store and get yourself 2 pair of those 5 pound ankle weights and strap one pair to your ankles and one to your wrists, then proceed to wear them daily while you are awake. Only can take them off to sleep or shower. Your ass will loose weight, I promise. Well unless of course you increase your caloric intake.

PS when you do take them off, be careful. You may bust yourself in the nose or something when you go to move your arm.

Haha, I should wear a 50 lb suit all day, and then when I take it off at night I'll be able to leap 20 feet into the air. :1orglaugh

I've actually looked into this option and I don't want to the ankle weights because it looks as though it can produce undue stress on my knees, which are already in bad shape. Might try the wrist weights though, not a bad idea.

They offer kettlebell classes at my gym. I haven't done it myself, but they can be a great workout. However, don't get caught up in it just because it is popular now. A kettlebell workout is not a substitute for a real gym and a varied weightlifting routine, however. You are better off just finding the closest gym and going to lift weights with barbells, dumbbells, machines and just use the kettlebells as an extra thing to change things up. If you have some fantasy that you are going to get a couple of kettlebells and do a kettlebell workout in your own home and that is going to get you in shape, it's not an optimal plan.

Thanks for the input, Jim. Right now I use an exercise bike and perform calisthenics as the exercise portion of my overall weight loss/new lifestyle routine. Along with a good dietary plan, I'm seeing (and feeling) some good results so far. It's getting to the point though where my endurance and overall thirst for exercise is increasing, and to keep the momentum I've created I want to add a new dimension to my exercise routine.

The plan that I'm creating may not be optimal in a grand sense, but it's certainly a vast improvement in my case. Though, I do agree that joining a quality gym would be ideal and that is a future benchmark in my plan. Thanks again. :thumbsup

You took the words right out of my mouth! My folks owned a gyn when I was younger and there was a set of Kettlebells there. After using them I ached more than any machine or free weight ever made me ache.

Whoo, that's +2. Now I'm starting to look for inexpensive kettlebell retailers. :thumbsup

Keep it up, Sands. You should learn how to cook meals at home too. Diet is a big part of the equation. I can email you my favorite recipes if you would like.

Thanks Jim! I appreciate the encouragement. :)

And sure, I've love to check out those recipes. I'm beginning to cook my own meals more and more, but I'm afraid they're somewhat plain like salads, baked chicken, and other easy to assemble and healthy food combinations. My email is admin * royswriting * com. :thumbsup
