Forget water and fire and asteroids from space for a moment. Can the Apocalypse be economic? Think about it.

read some conspiracy theory that 'great depressions' are used to generate fighting forces necessary to wipe people out etc

ie, world war 2 etc

It would make sense that an Economic Apocolypse would hit us when we never saw it coming. At least physical or 3rd party threats can be blamed. Economics is all us people
