ROME (Reuters) - Dog excrement used to be merely a nuisance to pedestrians, now it could be used as evidence against pet owners and may lead to fines.

A town in northern Italy plans to create a DNA database of all registered dogs and then test droppings left on pavements and in parks to identify the culprit and fine owners who fail to clean up after their pets, La Stampa daily reported Tuesday.If signs and invitations aren't enough, we'll try genetics. I want a clean city," Antonio Prencipe, councilor in charge of the environment in Vercelli, a town of some 45,000 inhabitants near Turin, told the paper.

DNA tests would cost around 13 euros ($19), which would be more than covered by fines, La Stampa said. It did not estimate the cost of creating a database.

The Israeli town of Petah Tikva launched a similar six-month trial program earlier this month, under which dog owners were asked to take their animals to a municipal veterinarian, who then swabs its mouth and collects DNA.

I think they should do this everywhere. I am sick of punks walking their dogs and not cleaning up after them :mad: If you don't clean up after your dog, you shouldn't have a dog :mad:

the first time i saw the guy up the street walk his dog past my house and his dog even peed on my mailbox I told him very politely "hey I work hard on my yard, i fertilize my grass and the excesive nitrogen in your dogs urine is going to leave burn spots on my lawn, and I will ask you to pay for the damage"

I take my dogs to the dog park and you'd be surprised how many people just look the other way when their dog shits. It sucks to have to pick up, but you have to do it.

I was in Hollywood yesterday and this lady takes her tiny Yorkie out of her purse and lets it shit in the middle of the fucking sidewalk without bothering to pick it up. It pisses me off because I pick up after both of my dogs religously, it's the law and it's polite. Just because it's a small shit does not mean it doesn't count (although I'm sure the lady I saw in Hollywood was just a rude bitch).

She should be fined. I hate the fucking assholes. You got a dog, clean it up. I get very conformational with them, If I catch them.

My wheels are on sidewalks, my hands are on those wheels. I fucking HATE both pet owners who can not clean up their animals droppings, nor can I stand those who have kids or they themselves drop candy, gum, etc on it either.

I should be legally allowed to stun gun any offenders so that they flop around on the same sidewalk.

It is not a trivial problem. A trivial problem would be that law that was overturned about wearing your pants to baggy. This is shit on the sidewalk that people can step in, slip on, or otherwise end up wearing. Plus it stinks and it can carry other crap that can infect others.

I always pick up after my dog. The fuckers that think they are above cleaning up after their dog should have their face rubbed in it. That is probably a bit over the top so fines seems like the next best thing.

That's may be my dogs shit but it was planted on the sidewalk by my asshole neighbor.

They can just send them a ticket in mail with the proof (sample of the shit) :), similar to the traffic lights with the cameras...........

My dog refuses to shit on sidewalks..he is pretty picky and likes to go where no one can see him....bushes.

Never taken my dog to dog parks, what a way to pick up diseases. I stick to good ol mountain trails.

Since we appear to be the only people in the neighborhood that know what a pooper scooper is I find myself not that upset with this.

My dogs are tiny, and if I am not watching them the entire time they are taking a deuce it gets lost in the grass and is hard to find. That being said, no matter what the size of the waste-- If you can't pick up after then, you don't deserve to own them.
