Game On Bitches - Evangelicals Rear Their Heads

This Weekend - 33 Pastors Flout Tax Law With Political Sermons

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...092802365.html

Quote:

Defying a federal law that prohibits U.S. clergy from endorsing political candidates from the pulpit, an evangelical Christian minister told his congregation Sunday that voting for Sen. Barack Obama would be evidence of "severe moral schizophrenia."

The Rev. Ron Johnson Jr. told worshipers that the Democratic presidential nominee's positions on abortion and gay partnerships exist "in direct opposition to God's truth as He has revealed it in the Scriptures." Johnson showed slides contrasting the candidates' views but stopped short of endorsing Obama's Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain.

Johnson and 32 other pastors across the country set out Sunday to break the rules, hoping to generate a legal battle that will prompt federal courts to throw out a 54-year-old ban on political endorsements by tax-exempt houses of worship.
So much for seperation of church and state.

I dont see it quite that way... freedom of speech no?

But doesnt apply to obama's church?

pornguy 09-29-2008 06:42 AM

If they have tax exempt status, then Politics should not be talked about by the people running the place.

No... it's against the law for preachers to make the pulpit a political pulpit... because they have undo influence when they invoke God into the process. We are a secular nation. Think about this... where do you think Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc etc would be if Evangelicals were ruling? We are not a theocracy.

Maybe instead of geting upset, just go ahead and remove tax exempt status from ALL Churches, and all will be ok.

churches are a business, they should be taxed accordingly.

theyve gotten a free ride on the tax dollar long enough,

as an atheist, tax their ass

You've really softened in your old age.. where's the burning torch of purifying justice?

Fletch XXX 09-29-2008 07:17 AM

I wouldn't say "softened," however I do know that hitting them in the pocket books will do more than tossing a molotov.

you burn their church they get sympathy, you tax them - they go out of business.

churches are going bankrupt left and right down here from katrina and not having their donations, ive been sitting back and laughing for two years at them in the news begging for clergy to donate LOL

BlackCrayon 09-29-2008 07:30 AM

They have been planning this for a few months. Was supposed to be a nation wide thing with this church group.

For a church to qualify for tax exempt status, they have to stay politics free, meaning they can't officially endorse any political candidates. I hope the govt analy rapes them and starts making them pay taxes.

I call them the Religious Reich for a reason..

I would like to see them get charged with RICO. This was an organized effort according to the WSJ.
