Trip to the Philadelphia Zoo (PICS)

Last weekend my inlaws and my little family went to the Philadelphia Zoo. It is the oldest zoo in America (1859) and I expected it to be a little run down. This also being my first trip to a cold-weather zoo (I'm from Florida) I'm not sure what I expected by the way of animals. I have to say we were pleasantly suprised. From the ticket price ($18) to the food to the layout, upkeep, cleanliness, everything about the zoo was great. They have done a good job with it. It was a beautiful day, perfect. We had a really good time.

Here are some pics

nice animals :)

Often cold weather zoo's are better because the animals come out to sun themselves.

If you're a big fan of zoos, I suggest the Singapore zoo. It's is incredible! There aren't any cages that obscure your vision of the animals. It's hard to explain in words, but I'd suggest it to anyone that is a big fan of zoos and animals.

Side note, It was voted the #2 zoo in the world.

I heard that Philadephia Zoo features a pair of Amour Tigers. There are like 30 of them left in the entire world.

That's correct, one Amur tiger is pictured above. The other was in the Big Cat house, it was too far away to photograph.

Sounds like you guys had a great afternoon Cyndalie.

Makes me wonder what the Atlanta Zoo is looking like. I don't think I've been there in over 20 years. The only other zoo I can remember going to when I was growing up was the Frankfurt Zoo while we lived in Heidelberg for a few years.

Great photos too! :winkwink:

Great pics!

The last time I was at the Philadelphia Zoo (I'm from the Philly area) was when I was a kid. I remember looking at the orangutans. One of them was up high on a branch above the rest of them when it all of a sudden took a shit. Like lightning, one of them snatched it right out of mid air and held it up to its mouth, like it was gonna eat it! Then the orangutan looked up at the people that were watching him from the other side of the glass and almost smiled as he threw the poo away! He was messing with us! Everyone started laughing. It was the most memorable part of that trip. I wish we had pics of it.

Unkept and poorly financed zoos are, but most are great for kids, super educational on conservation and breeding programs are designed to help protect the species. So there are positives to them as well.
