Is typosquatting legal? (pornstar name typos)
Im looking at typosquatting. Particularily the names type. Eg. the TaraPatrick dot com thread in the sell and buy forum. Is this legal, is it going to be safe/stable enough for the next few years to buy into?
|
Also, is there a way i can set up a typo domain, to redirect to the correct domain, while using my affiliate promo code to potentially make a few bucks without having to set anything up?
|
Yeah its legal, and yeah you can redirect with htaccess.
|
What kind of affiliate programs could you use if you were trying this with some celebs name for instance?
|
So what is more efficient:
forward with godaddy, and have affiliates code in the destination url. This doesnt requre hosting. Since it is all redirects i dont need any space/bandwidth i think? or Get hosting, redirect with .htaccess with affiliate code in the destination url? |
actually its only legal for generic keyword domains. If your squatting on a servicemark or trademark ( like porn star names ) you can get sued. You can of course set up parody sites since thats covered under freedom of speech statutes.
All that assumes your in te USA. You also need to be concerned about UDRP complaints, esp. since its cheaper to file one of those than to sue someone. |
Typosquatting is cybersquattting and it can get you sued rather quickly...

Typo
Wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. There seems to be enough potential "lawsuit-soup" during the normal course of biz. No need to go after more.
