15 Arrested Outside Presidential Debate in Protest Led by Iraq Veterans Against War

As John McCain and Barack Obama prepared to face off in their third and final debate last night, outside the gates of Hofstra University, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, backed by hundreds of demonstrators, protested at the campus gates.

At least fifteen people were arrested, including at least five members of IVAW, on charges of disorderly conduct. Nassau County Police on horseback trampled one member of IVAW, Nick Morgan, a veteran who served in Iraq for about a year. His condition is unknown.

The protest was organized by IVAW members Matthis Chiroux and Kris Goldsmith. Last week, Chiroux sent a letter to CBS debate moderator Bob Schieffer spelling out the demands of IVAW and demanding that at least two veterans be allowed entry into the debate to ask Senators Obama and McCain one question each. He did not receive a response.

I think these Veterans are running down the wrong tree. THey should goto Bush's Ranch in Texas and do the protests.

You are allowed to peacefully protest. The moment that your actions begin to take away the rights of others or endanger others your rights are null and void. Felons lose their right to vote after committing crimes too.

At one time in history we could peacefully protest anywhere. Now we have areas we can protest in. Soon that too will be gone.

Of course at one time you could protest anywhere on public property etc. Now they have lawyered it up to the point where you are told that you need a permit.

if these guys are allowed in to ask a couple questions, then why shouldn't the rest of us be?
Why shouldn't the International Brotherhood of Pornographers be allowed to just waltz in and ask questions? If we're not allowed, should we protest?

The only people I have seen that actually get to ask the people in power the hard questions are the we are change group, and they do it by force.

My father used to tell me as a child that the difference between America and other countries is that in America, you can say what you feel if you feel it, and you can't be arrested for it. Whereas in other countries, it was against their law to speak out against the government.

I'm just sayin. There was a time when, if the average american had a time machine to see these cages, they would think america was taken over by the soviet union. No joke, and the older among us knows it.
