Baseball fans - who is your all time favorite player?

I have baseball fever at the moment. I followed it a lot growing up but living in the UK it isn't that easy to follow. Though, it is easier now then it was when I first moved here and my dad visited during the series and was appalled the sports channel interrupted it to show Australian motor biking. Now the series is on two different channels over night so I can watch it.

So, who is your all time favorite player? I was born in 1976 in the Philly area so for me it is Mike Schmidt.

My favorite player is also a hall of fame third baseman, Brooks Robinson.

Great 3B for sure.

1985 Dwight Gooden.

20 years old. 24-4. 1.53 ERA. 268 K's.

Never lived up to the promise of that season though.

Channel 5 (they used to do great baseball coverage every week but lost the rights..made it feel like a real club) and then NASN (North American Sports Network) that you get as part of the Setanta sports package. They are both taking the same feed though.

HotMeghan_GL 10-23-2008 08:14 AM

My favorite as a kid was Darren Daulton!

Al Kaline, George Brett, Lenny Dykstra, Greg Maddux are also some of my favorites.

Yeah i used to watch quite a lot of it on Channel 5. Wondered what had happened to it.

I don't get NASN with our Setanta package for some reason. When i phoned up they wanted another £10pm just to add that channel...

Being from Montreal, my hero was Gary Carter! No need to tell you what position I played...Catcher!

I have loved baseball all my life. I watched Dwight Gooden back in the days of him playing on the same farm team as Darryl Strawberry.

But, my favorite player was Orel Hershiser. I can still hear the announcer saying" and now batting Orrrreeelllll Hershiser" So cool.

And I love Lou Piniella... Sweet Lou...

And the year I took my dad to see a full on weekend of Cubs games, double header on Saturday and then Sunday afternoon. That was in 1995... 2 months before he passed away. The best trip of my entire life... just me and him and baseball!

Did I mention I adore baseball???

okok 10-23-2008 10:02 AM

Cal Ripken

Eddie Murray ("EDDIE! EDDIE! EDDIE!")

George Bell (I loved the Blue Jays as a kid even as a Baltimoron, only because for some reason I LOVED the logo and font of their uniforms in the 80s)

axelcat 10-23-2008 10:17 AM

Kirk Gibson

It comes with it for us and really was the whole reason for getting it for me. I think we only pay like £10 a month for the whole package. We have sky but we had to call Setanta and have the package added by them directly rather than through sky.

Favorite all time player would have to be Roberto Clemente although he was before my time. After that, Pete Rose ( I greatly admire his play ) but I have always been a Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

The 1968 Giants. Mays if I have to choose just one.

My dad is big into strat-o-matic fantasy baseball and when he was teaching me how to play it as a teen I always ended up with Johnny Bench on my team.

Is it wrong of me to actually like that film?

Always liked Greg Maddux. I like the way he prepares and studies the game. Works hard to be a complete player, not just a pitcher.
