Credit crisis = no credit = fewer CCs given out = Could spike DVD industry with cash?

So given the current state of things and the credit crunch, for sure this means less credit cards are going to be given out. Some banks are even going to cancel cards I've read. This means people can not transfer their balance or keep spending on dumb shit once their current card is maxed and they are stuck. Then what will they do?

But "porn is recession proof" they say, right?

Well it may be but with no or less credit that means fewer sign ups on websites. There is just no way around it. People for sure won't stop jacking off but no or less credit could seriously hurt the paysite model.

ACH will probably spike but what about consumers going back to good ol' cash assuming they have any of that left. Pay by phone could pick up. Of course everyone just may say "fuck it" and hit the tubes and torrents even harder taking what they can get because that's all they can afford (free).

Do you think we could see a spike in the DVD market based on guys getting offline and heading back to the local porn store where they can pick up a DVD for cash?

I'm betting on the tubes and torrents but I wouldn't be surprised if Joe The Plumber started showing his face around the local porn shop again.

Your thoughts?

Oh, and sorry for the business thread. I know those are frowned upon here.

maybe... truthfully i dont know... maybe its like the ol sayin... "Once you go black, you never go back"?

mynameisjim 10-25-2008 05:30 PM

Not unless the big illegal tube sites go away. The quality there seems more than adequate for most people who are tight on cash.

Maybe you could start a netflix for porn users. Every DVD would have to be steam cleaned though..lol.

One positive way to look at it is, they are going to feel the crunch too if it comes down to it. Fewer credit cards also mean they are not joining dating sites or cam sites, the very way many tube sites make money.

Dunno, in the long run this could be a good thing for those who can weather the storm.

I know if I fall short you can find me sucking cock on Santa Monica Blvd.

The problem with this theory is anyone can get a bank account with a debit card and use that just like a credit card to sign up. Even people that are in Checksystems can get one of those second chance bank accounts or a prepaid card like Netspend.com. Even though traditional credit cards will be harder to come by the average schmuck has more options than ever now to be able to purchase something online via a credit card...

Do they not have DEBIT/CREDIT CARDS drawn on their personal bank accounts, or pre-paid credit cards where you live?

:2 cents:

munki 10-25-2008 05:52 PM

Who doesn't have a debit card these days... same as cash.

Right.. most people's wallets are full of cards that say visa or mastercard on them that aren't tied to any credit line. I'm not sure I see the logic here.

...except maybe for Canadians, their bank debit cards aren't visa/mc types, so if they can't get a credit card, then it's no visa/mc in their wallet. I dunno why more people don't have options for Canadians without credit, like Canadian online checks or Interac Online. It's a big market up there.

Sorry man, I've been living in a 3rd world country too long. The cards I'm used to over here usually will not work for online purchases.

I need to get out more I think.

i don't think yo have thought the credit crisis through....

there's going to a huge decline in disposable income... its already been happening..

people are losing and have lost 20-35% of their retirement accounts and that will trickle down at some point.

retail sales are going to be terrible this holiday season and thats going cause further turmoil in the market.

of course its not the end of the world, but i think its going to be very challenging.

aico 10-25-2008 06:03 PM

I've had ACH and Phone billing on my sites for a long time...

I actually agree with this (not the male prostitution part) and can see it as a possibility.

Unless tube sites have found a pool of surfers unaffected by the global slowdown, they are about to inherit a bunch of broke freeloaders who raise their overhead but don't spend a dime.

But yes, prepaid debit cards are everywhere. You can get one at wal mart or even most gas stations like 7-11 now I think.

I think like you said if you can weather the storm, you may find yourself in a pretty incredible position on the other side. Despite what most people think, I actually feel the smaller programs will have the best shot to ride it out.

Horny Dude 10-25-2008 11:21 PM

Those pre-paid credit cards are all over in my area. Seen a lot of talk about guys buying them so they can't get track have some porn site show up on their statement. Don't have to worry about rebills either...:disgust
