Spam me with proxyy affiliate programs---INTERNET BANNED IN AUSTRALIA

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...7-2862,00.html

So the "internet is banned" in Australia. What next?

Wizzo 10-30-2008 08:42 AM

Thats some crazy shizzit there... Doesn't AU have a freedom of speech type right that people could fight this?

seeandsee 10-30-2008 08:48 AM

The government has declared it will not let internet users opt out of the proposed national internet filter.

So it's new China out there, cool

NickB. 10-30-2008 08:49 AM

jesus wtf !!!!!

INever 10-30-2008 11:08 AM

What's worse is I had to bump this topic back to the front page. This is very serious shit that can fuck with our money.

If we each just see one less crack whore a year, and donate that to EFF or a new adult webmaster organization, then our industry could afford to retain some lobbyists to give out free dope and hookers to influential Congressional reps, to make sure MANDATORY NATIONWIDE INTERNET FILTERING won't happen HERE!!

crockett 10-30-2008 11:18 AM

Australia sure has been going down hill the last few years. What's up with that? I keep seeing how they have banned this or that.. They took away every one's guns not long ago didn't they?

Sounds like proxy sites might be big business there in a year or so.

I've been following this. The big companies want to scrap Web 1.0 and bring in Web 2.0 and that will mean you pay for your Internet the same way you do for your cable. You'll only be offered packages. You'll pay a certain amount for certain channels. So say you want the myspace, msn, hotmail. Then you'll only have access to those sites. Say you want Face Book, You Tube, Google then you pay for those. That's the way it heading. No more free access to anywhere you want to visit. Also for guys who make websites you're going to have to pay for a permit to publish a website and you'll be put on a sub domain that they own. Crazy shit.

It sounds crazy, and I am not sure it will ever head that far down that road (well anytime soon) - but generally speaking without net neutrality and non-censorship by Government I've no doubt the internet will head down a terrible path. Ironically perhaps, the only thing really saving it at this point is business as well; Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and every small to large internet business in between that actually understands what the internet is about. We can be thankful that many Governments have learnt a lot about free economics over the last 100 years, and that today they can somewhat relate that back to having a free and open internet without ridiculous taxes, charges or regulation. I really hope that doesn't change.

Not the last few years, it has been like this for a long time. We've always had very draconian laws and law enforcement and unlike American's most Australians have a very big Government mentality, expecting it to take care of everything and in turn blaming it for everything. The reason they get away with it so easily is that most Australian's aren't politically inclined at all, and shit like this just passes and one day when John Smith comes across Australian Government filter page he will go "damn, so that's what that filter stuff was all about" and than goes back to Google and keeps looking without so much as raising an eyebrow. At times it boggles my mind how regulated our nation is.

You just described the issue of net neutrality... which is a different issue from this one from what I understand. This is a draconian content restriction technique, for limiting access to porn and terrorism tools to start with, and later it could be applied to any kind of content that the govt deems contrary to the public good... Similar to the great firewall of China.

Well, you said it. If the regulated are not responding to the regulators, you gonna end up like DDR in many ways.
Its amazing that politicians, which "represent" people in free democratic countries, are free to do whatever they want "in the name of this and that...". However, even if the intentions might be good, like protecting its own people, I think these kind of desperate local initiatives express the frustration - and lack of international cooperation in fighting serious crime. And if something is legal in some other countries, they should target the local individuals involved - not all people; Thats like blocking a highway for everyone, because some few are driving too fast...

pr0 10-30-2008 04:11 PM

I would be quite happy to see countries continue with these moves.

Making all pornography totally illegal & filtered everywhere, would create a gigantic illicit marketplace, where profits would leap into the 10,000,000% range

I say let the Christian freaks keep burning books. It will make our remaining books that much more valuable in the long run....LoL

It's not just about porn though. If you read the article, they say it could extend to "controversial websites" as well.

That is pure lunacy. Australia is off my list of countries to visit :)

How could that even be possible to implement on the net ?

Australia does NOT have a bill of rights.

The Government can do pretty much what they want in legislative terms.

Sucks.

pocketkangaroo 10-30-2008 08:26 PM

U.S might not be that far off. If no net neutrality, ISPs will be able to control content more. A couple more conservative judges means obscenity prosecutions and more stringent adult laws become more viable. Not to mention that we are already shutting down sites for obscenity and even gambling these days.

Remember that McCain tried to pass a law a couple years back that would have essentially put every social networking site, including this forum, out of business in the U.S.

I have to say, I wouldn't be completely surprised if the Government completely railroads this onto the Australian people (that is a Krudd favorite), but I do think they very seriously underestimated how much this would piss off the public. Every major ISP is wholeheartedly against it (if on technical and cost reasons alone, but many also on ethical grounds), the general public is very strongly against it, and along with EFA, ISPs, etc I don't think it will be long before the internet business community (picking up on the strong groundswell of public support) like Google, Yahoo, etc really get behind the push to stop it. Krudd the born again seems set on it though, and unfortunately not many people really understand the kind of personality he has, so who knows... If it goes through though, it will never be rolled back and constantly advanced, of that I am sure. So get behind the push now, even if it is only a $10 donation or a single email. Fuck this Government.

Someone posted this below in the previous thread, this would be OK if its true...

""There will be 2 levels of blocking. A ban all adult and naughty sites one which you call your isp you can opt-out off.

A 2nd one which you can't opt-out off. Which will include anything the gov or the Christian right believe are bad for you to judge as an adult. Such sites as pro-anorexia, pro-suicide, right to die sites, and so on.

Isp's have already came out and said they will pass on any costs to their customers involved with the maintenance of this server side blocking bollocks, so it's a load of wank imo."

Yup I posted that, problem is it won't stop there. The Christian right are all ready campaigning to add gambling sites to the perma block list and you can bet other minority groups are lining up to get whatever the fuck they want added to the list.

Thanks communist Krudd, I'll be sure to remember this at the 2011 election, cunt.
