But shouldn't everyone have the equal right to make themselves miserable?

Sure. I guess I should have the right to chop off my penis. WHY I would even want to do it is beyond me.

My advice for gays. Remember as kid and for Christmas there was the one "cool" toy you just HAD to have. You waited what seem like forever to get it on Christmas morning. Then when you got it you found out it sucked? That's marriage.

Sure. Everybody should have equal right to MAKE THEMSELVES miserable. If that includes getting married then perhaps they should MAKE THEMSELVES like the opposite sex too.

Don't say that. Marriage can't be that bad surely?

Arkansas passed a measure to ban gay people from adopting. Barely making news.

Its not, although I have only been officially married for 3 weeks now, I have been living with the same woman for 4 yrs now and its not bad at all.

Babaganoosh 11-05-2008 09:58 AM

I say ban marriage entirely. It's not fair that only homosexuals are protected from wrecking their lives. I DEMAND protection from the institution of marriage too.

living together and being amrried is NOT the same. Living together one of you can just leave if you get sick of each other. Now it's bit more complicated. 3 weeks? Yeah post back in about 33 weeks. She's got that piece of paper. Trust me it IS different. Especialy in her mind. Good luck.

Geez dude, just because you light a firecracker, forget to throw it and it blows off your hand, doesn't mean everyone does the same thing.

go look at marriage statistics and come back to me. if you took a poll of 100 people that are/were currently married and asked how many have been divorced at least 75% will say yes.

Ok, you're looking at some statistics and deciding that marriage is what ruins a relationship? Up here in Canada the divorce rate is on the decline.

Such large numbers of people in North America end up in divorce because its the simple solution for a simple mind. God forbid they actually had to put some effort in to their marriage to make it work.

lesbodojo 11-05-2008 10:59 AM

I have been crying about this on and off this morning. I'm not sure what I should say here that won't get slammed by people who don't truly have a stake in this. Domestic partnership doesn't offer the same rights/benefits as marriage. Who knows when the opportunity for my gf & I to marry will come to fruition....maybe not for another 20 years! Decisions like this have a much bigger impact than some of you realize (fiscal, etc). And don't we have bigger issues to deal with in California than changing the constitution to ban people like me from pursuing happiness and love?

Bryan G 11-05-2008 11:02 AM

Come to Canada we legalized gay marriage years ago.

CurrentlySober 11-05-2008 11:07 AM

Each to their own...

Whats next? Ban Interracial marriages?

????????????????????????????????????

tASSy 11-05-2008 11:08 AM

so sad...i'm not sure i'd ever get married again myself, but if i wanted to and wanted to marry a woman i'd like the option to be there. i guess that whole right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness bit was all crap. i'm more sad for the many gay friends that i have that got married while gay marriage was legal here - how much time are they going to have to spend in the legal system over the next several years? :(

awwww, i'm so sorry babe, truly. i don't have any words that can comfort you except that i love you and you and your gf know what's real in your hearts. as progressive as this country is trying to be on certain issues ie: energy, environment etc. most are still stuck in 1950 when it comes to the picture of marriage. i am absolutely shocked that in Cal. of all places, no on 8 did not win. hang in there sweetie, this fight ain't over by a longshot.

Thank you for your sensitivity. I'm so sad right now.

Wow I am shocked about your response but sadly not surprised! It wasn't about marriage no it was about equal rights gay people want marriage not gay marriage we pay taxes we want nothing more or less then you! And using children to scare people into hate tatics is hideous and I ashamed. Many school people came out and said it would not be taught in schools and even if it was who cares they teach you about Hilter does that mean your children will be dictators?

Fletch XXX 11-05-2008 12:34 PM

if i hadnt moved from cali i wouldve voted so you girls/guys could marry same sex.

I had a gay roomate for a bit while living in Los Angeles, and understand the hardships

Well don't get offened but this whole gay marriage stuff is why Bush won twice. It helped drive Jesus freaks to the polls that otherwise wouldn't have. now I'm not saying you should get your rghts but you need ot look at the bigger picture. did havign Bush for 8 years and republcains controling the Congress until 2006 help your cause? No. In fact it hurt it. Now gay marriage is banned nearly everywhere where before there wasn't any expressed opinion on way or the other.

I know you guy want things now but sometimes you need to wait until the rest of the world is ready. The gays have been too impatitent and lost. Now they won't have marriage rights in many area for DECADES if ever. Gays needed to wait until the old Jesus freaks died off. Maybe if gays never pressed the issue in 2000 maybe by 2016 it would have worked. Perhaps 2020 which is just 12 years away. How many of the 65+ crowd in 2000 will be alive to vote in 2020? How many younger voter that are much more tolerant of gay be around in 2020? MILLIONS.

The fact is gays should have gone for domestic partnerships which is something most people can accept then after 15-20 years of the public being used to that go for gay marriage. No they wanted it all right now and they blew it.

Now you have to get these new bans overturned and that's not going not happen anytime soon. sure you can take it to court. DON'T. It will just piss of the Jesus freaks and set you back futher. Lick your wounds and try to get domestic partnerships in all states maybe by 2032 probably closer to 2040 you can get gay marriage passed. THINK this time.

Irony here is that you can pay taxes and sure as shit pay taxes that go to put these children in school, but you can't have the rights. Talk about total bullshit. Every time I pay my property taxes and I see the taxes that go towards schools, and yet our school system SUCKS BALLS!

Then I have to watch the scare tactics used by the proponents of prop 8. Sad just sad. I can only hope that this will go to litigation and a California Supreme court judge will find the prop unconstitutional and overturn it.

I love how we live in a country that preaches separation of church and state, but the fucking government and props like this are pushed so heavily by churches.

kane 11-05-2008 02:08 PM

So I wonder. There were a lot of gay people in California that got married. Are those marriages now null and void?

donkevlar 11-05-2008 02:11 PM

I think gay marriage shouldn't be legal...

I also think that straight marriage shouldn't be legal.

You have spoken the TRUTH sir!!
It's different for women, the piece of paper means EVERYTHING. Women dream about marriage and husbands their entire life and even if they don't realise it they have HIGH expectations for the MAN they marry :2 cents:

i hear that. McCain and palin bash socialism until its time to send kids to schools. Palin even sent her kids to PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

socialism is alive and well in the US alrdy, look at the juvenile detention and public school taxes on our homes and you can see it. they went after Obama for "spreading the wealth" me having to pay for your kids education and to send your kid to a juvenile detention center because they are bad or run away is socialism at its finest, spreading the wealth.

ScottXXX 11-05-2008 02:19 PM

While I am not a pro marriage person its not all bad. My first marriage was horrible I never intended on getting married again but shit happens and I did. I married a women I knocked up after 3 weeks together, whom I met in a bar, while I was doing shit tons of drugs. 8 years later I have never been happier... my wife is the greatest person I have ever met.

What the take away lesson? I got insanely lucky.. don't get married its a stupid custom. Only get married if you need some of the legal protections and benifits it provides.

BlackCrayon 11-05-2008 02:19 PM

Sadly what I got from people who were against gay marriage on mainstream boards is that they think legalizing gay marriage will result in kids being taught it in school or something. They think gay people are out to turn kids gay or something retarded like that.

Really comes down to whether you beleive being gay is nature or nurture... its sad that people think the latter.

Proposition 8 Protest Rally & Street Closures
Wednesday, November 5th

As deeply disappointed as we all are that California voters passed Proposition 8, we must not allow that disappointment to linger. This vote is a temporary defeat in the long march toward equal rights for all citizens in America.

Please join me for a protest rally tonight at 7 pm on San Vicente Blvd between West Hollywood Park and the Pacific Design Center (647 N. San Vicente Blvd. West Hollywood CA 90069) as we move forward towards restoring equality for all in California.

San Vicente Blvd, between Santa Monica Blvd and Melrose Avenue will be closed tonight starting at 6 pm. San Vicente south-bound traffic will be directed to make left or right at Santa Monica Blvd. Signs have already been posted to help divert traffic.

Civil rights groups moved quickly today to challenge Proposition 8, asking the California Supreme Court to strike down the latest attempt to ban same-sex marriage across the state.

While refusing to concede that the ballot measure has passed, gay marriage supporters nevertheless filed a petition with the state's high court in the event the current vote holds and Proposition 8 amends the California constitution to once again outlaw marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera also filed an identical legal challenge in the state Supreme Court, joined by Santa Clara County and the Los Angeles city attorney. San Francisco city officials, who pushed to overturn California's gay

marriage laws in the previous court fight, argue that Proposition 8 violates the equal protection rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Backers of the measure claimed victory Tuesday night with the initiative leading by a 52 to 48 percent margin.

The legal challenge maintains that Proposition 8 is invalid and takes away a "fundamental right'' from "just one group — lesbian and gay Californians.'' The petition argues that the state constitution cannot be amended if it violates other constitutional rights.

The state Supreme Court this spring struck down California's previous laws banning gay marriage, finding that they violated the state constitution. That 4-3 ruling set in motion the political firestorm over Proposition

8, which was designed to trump the Supreme Court's decision.

Marriage is fine. Pointing to the divorce rate as a reason not to get married is like pointing to the small business failure rate which is much higher and saying "why would you want to start a business"?

Been married for a while now, nothing wrong with it. If you approach it with a modicum of intelligence and not marry the drunk crack whore you've only known for 3 months as a fuck buddy then it's not really an issue. If you've lived with someone for a couple of years a bit of paper doesn't change the situation.
