Town of Batman wants to get paid...so suing...

Quote:

The mayor of Batman, Turkey, is suing Warner Bros. and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan for using the Cape Crusader's name without the city's permission.

Variety reports Huseyin Kalkan, mayor of the predominantly Kurdish town located in the Batman province of Turkey on the Batman River, is preparing to file a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from the blockbuster film.

"There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us."

He also hopes to pin a number of unsolved murders along with the town's female suicide rate on the psychological impact the film's success had on Batman residence, the publication said. (Why so serious?) Kalkan claims to have evidence that will prove the city of Batman was founded before the 1939 debut of DC Comic's superhero by the same name.

Why the city is complaining now about its name being used for masked justice may have something to do with The Dark Knight having grossed over $994 million worldwide so far.

reading comprehension = FAIL

spacedog 11-13-2008 04:50 PM

What a fucking joke, lol..

Boston = Band named after a city
Philadelphia = movie named after a city
Asia = band named after a continent
Dodge City = movie named after city (Kansas)

There's more out there I'm sure

WiredGuy 11-13-2008 04:54 PM

They need to prove that the term 'batman' was confusingly similiar to the town of batman. I'd like to see them show 1 person who went to the movie expecting to see the turkish town, lol. The judge will throw this out so fast.

Since the comic and movie have no connotation or usage connection to some city in Turkey I doubt any legitimate court would see any infringement.

I'm no lawyer though. In reading that article it looks a lot like a greedy money grab ploy. No one "used the name of their city", Batman the comic character has nothing to do with them or their country in any way. Show me the episode where it was revealed that Bruce Wayne was of Turkish descent. :D

Frivolous foriegn bullshit. :2 cents:

In related news the poultry association of tasty birds is launching a lawsuit against the descendants of Kemal Ataturk and the Governments of Turkey for using one of the poultry associations tasty birds names without their permission. The poultry association of tasty birds will show evidence that one of its tasty birds was indeed called a turkey before the 1920 formation of the country.
"There is only one Turkey in the world," Butterball said. "This countries governments used the name of our tasty bird without informing us."
