How many businesses have gone out of business in your area?

In my area I am aware of around a dozen businesses that have gone out of business since these difficult economic times have been upon us. Some other businesses have layed off as much as half of their employees and others have cut off all benefits they had in place. Some of them have been in business for fifty years or more. Is this happening all across the country?

tony286 11-23-2008 07:42 AM

well by me linens and things and circuit city are gone. There was this cool book/cd store they are gone and I see more and more empty spaces in strip malls as I drive around.

Any input people?

notoldschool 11-23-2008 07:47 AM

We had 5 restaurants go down in one month all in one target parking lot. Im pissed that my favorite steak house went along with others including shells.

HorseShit 11-23-2008 07:52 AM

I am not aware of any restaurants going out of business in my area, the ones I am aware of are manufacturing type companies which may lead to restaurants going out of business as well as other service types of business.

Not here such thing. Here companys build as abnormal new facilities.Today was birthday party of one huge furniture store and it was full as ant farm.Actualy it still full as ant farm since it will be over for 2 hours. They even hired french chef to celebrate first birthday of division in city.If new stores and factories continue to grow with such speed,we will become new dubai.

Where i live they just are building a new village with tons of little shops.. not sure how well they will do .. But I guess we will see next year :)

Yngwie 11-23-2008 09:20 AM

well, I'm in Canada, but seeing as The Source is owned by Circuit City that will mean that those stores will more than likely be fucked. One that is going out of business for sure is Linens and Things..

Supz 11-23-2008 10:09 PM

i live in downtown manhattan, just the major banking institutions here :). It stays pretty busy during the days here.

kane 11-23-2008 10:15 PM

In the small town I live there hasn't been anything I know of, but about 20 miles away is a major city and they have Circuit City closing and the news was just saying how one of the major malls that has been around since before I was born will be entering into bankruptcy. However, in fairness, the mall over the last few years has spent 10's of millions on renovations, a huge new parking garage and tons of remodeling and then the recession hit. Had they stayed how they previously were they may not have had the problems.

Horny Dude 11-23-2008 11:02 PM

I live in San Diego and we have so many businesses go under. Many of them were small mom & pop shops that opened up when the housing bubble was growing. Now they are closing left and right. Restaurants are cutting hours or just closing altogether. We also have many big companies closing as well. The mall by my house looks empty with so many "For Rent" signs in the windows. Sad:(

mattz 11-23-2008 11:06 PM

dav3 11-24-2008 03:37 AM

marko13 11-24-2008 05:14 AM

Yeah, but why would anyone want to buy CD's? They would have to close down sooner or later anyway.

Star 69 11-24-2008 05:19 AM

A lot of people shut done their businesses here in Ukraine.

Voodoo 11-24-2008 05:36 AM

I have a feeling that every store that doesn't provide an essential product or service, is going to have a very rough few years.

AngusAl 11-24-2008 05:07 PM

I'm on the East Coast and I'm on the road quite a bit and I have seen over 75 different buisnesses close in the last 6 months alone and I have talked to several people I know that are in business for themselves (not online) that are talking about shutting down..........I have to say things are tougher now than I can ever remember and I'm 45..................

That's the problem. We should have been like this all along. 55 department stores in a mall makes no fucking sense. No one is ever in them to begin with. I dunno this may be good for the world.

Get back to basics.

RP Fade 11-24-2008 05:13 PM

i dunno about how many but which I noticed, i saw a bed, bath and beyond and a porsche dealership gone in the last 3 months.

spacedog 11-24-2008 05:26 PM

nothing closing yet, on the contrary more shit is opening up..

A new Kohls is opening soon.. about 2 months ago one of those everything for a dollar stores opened up.. business is booming for them I think.. I see a few new construction projects going on around town but forget what kind of business they are.. Oh, and a new Holiday Inn too.
