Penthouse buying Playboy? makes sense?

with Playboy's stock price so low, a buck and change, and the economy so messed up how do they get out of the doldrums? It's gotta be sold sometime or a major investor taken on to breathe life into it. If Penthouse could afford AFF why not Playboy at a fraction of the price of AFF?

I see these rich guys buying pro sports franchises as toys to play with at 300Million to 1Billion - wouldn't owning Playboy be the ultimate toy for a guy?

Mutt 11-28-2008 07:08 AM

i didn't read or hear anything - there was a thread comparing Penthouse and Playboy on another forum and it just popped in my head that Penthouse would be a good suitor for Playboy.

Davy 11-28-2008 07:29 AM

They have to wait until Hef is dead.

I don't think 'playboy style' content has much appeal to anyone these days, any more than you could sell 1920's content to a large group of people. strictly a niche market these days $.02

btw what would a sale of PB mean to GFY?

Fletch XXX 11-28-2008 08:05 AM

people actually buy porn mags still?

i was referring to both Penthouse and Playboy, while it may not be gonzo pov porn, it surely does classify as smut. adult porn whatever you want to label it, if the wife gets mad or kids cant look at it, its porn to me.

hard to sell advertising these days

Jim_Gunn 11-28-2008 09:29 AM

Someone could do wonders with that brand if they knew what they were doing. But it has to be someone who knows how to work efficiently and make money, not someone who will have a huge staff and do things in some corporate, bloated way with lots of unnecessary employees and little clue how to make revenue in the short term.

mikesouth 11-28-2008 12:22 PM

Playboy is a dinosaur. For penthouse to do a buyout makes no sense, Playboy isn't even competition. It isnt even worth READING anymore.

OK, in that case I agree. But I still think Playboy will last longer as a Mag because its a better brand and its more than naked girls. It's more a lifestyle mag than a porn mag.

Yes, they buy ours. SCORE Magazine, Naughty Neighbors, Leg Sex, Voluptuous, 18eighteen, 40Something, Newcummers, and XLGirls to name a few.

It's called the coffee table effect. That is, you can't just leave it on the coffee table, when people come over to visit. The ideal lifestyle magazine, is one you can leave on the coffee table and the girlfriend, mother in law, won't have an issue with you.

It always has been, Playboy and Hustler do much better as to their more mainstream acceptance.

Jim, you said it, they have to cut back, and assign a much smaller staff to do the magazine.

The Brand has huge value. The cable portion has much more value then the magazine.

Playboy is way more competitive to Penthouse then anyone else. The issue you have today, with both Playboy and Penthouse, is Maxim, which you can leave on the coffee table.

You are right, it is a lifestyle mag, but as long as they need to be sold with a covered (black) PolyBag, instead of a clear bag like Maxim, their sales will keep declining. Playboy has great distribution, they had an even better distribution in the old days, but with more Mom and Pop shops closing, book stores, and Walmart opening up more stores, and not accepting adult magazines, it's simply hard to sell magazine. You can not get them infront of the viewer, the potential customer has to seek out your magazine.

We tried very hard to get into this market with www.Lookergirls.com aka Looker Magazine, and didn't make it. Over a million $$$ down the drain.

NaughtyRob 11-28-2008 02:01 PM

Playboy should buy back stock and go private.

Deej 11-28-2008 02:47 PM

If deancapture gets canned for talking about the server speed - then youre all fucked :2 cents:

Mutt 11-28-2008 03:57 PM

the irony is that at one time and still today by some Playboy was criticized for exploiting women and now the Playboy brand means much more to young women than young men. Millions of girls worship Playboy - they tattoo their asses with the Bunny logo.

The Internet killed Playboy - take a look at Playboy and compare to Met-Art, FTVGirls and others - Playmates with fakes tits was a huge mistake.

It will take somebody with a vision to find a new identity for Playboy - a young version of Hefner.

The mags you see outsell everything else here in Europe, is not porn. It mags like FHM, M and Maxim ( www.maxim.co.uk ) - Like Playboy, its a lifestyle/fad Mag that use the sexy stuff to kick the doors in. If you want to make a Mag today, you need a design that you can leave on the desk without being labeled as a pervert

But your biggest problem is probably that you are in the US - you got one screwed up set of rules of what you can and cant when it comes to nudity.

Its all about thinking outside the box, and knowing what the users want before they know it themselves

Personally, I was never that found of Playboy to begin with...far too tame for my tastes. I've always thought that the best thing about Playboy was its ability to get celebs naked. :2 cents:

StuartD 11-28-2008 04:37 PM

From the conversations I had at the playboy mansion, Hef is simply not selling.

Was that that maddening MM thread featuring the blind lecturing the blind?

jaYMan 12-17-2008 11:49 AM

I agree with the much could be done with Playboy.

Its a brand almost like no other. (2 others come to mind as I typed that lol)

aniloscash 12-17-2008 12:23 PM

some how I suspect hefner and family own more than 50% of the stock which would be why there could not be a hostle take over. thats my guess.

slapass 12-17-2008 12:31 PM

Women still get in line to be in Playboy. With the constant stream of celebs the world over it should be a permanent online subscription for any guy over the age of 40. They need to work the online thing and sell playboy.com not some other url. Sell the Playboy.com with 50 plus years or whatever it is of babes. Just scan ever damn pic they ever took and put it online. Make the subscription cheap and add a AFF branded to playboy. Add playboy cams. Add adult.com content so they have hardcore section and let that sucker rip. i know this is 10 years past when they should have done this but it is still not too late.

I hope they don't... I like Playboy for what it is, without the hardcore and with all the beauty and glamour. But business is business, so let's see...

boneprone 12-17-2008 05:25 PM

I think only a government bailout can save Playboy at this point.

Do you think we can rally for one? Great attention grabber.
