Women of GFY - Dr. Uzzi Reiss in LA, look him up

Why am I writing this? Read.

My girlfriend has been on birth control since she was 17, recently (at 26) she has been having 2 periods per month. She was told the birth control pills she was taking just needed to be changed because they didn't "work" with her anymore. She did this 3 times, no luck.

We got some blood work done & 2 GYN docs out here in Las Vegas said she was fine. Still wanting some reassurance we contacted a fertility center in San Francisco. Her FSH level (11-12) was at the level of a 40 year old.

Basically, the follicles in her ovaries responsible for producing / releasing eggs were going bad (eg, getting she was on her way to becoming sterile).

We then went to a fertility center here in Vegas where they gave her different birth control pills and were on the way to preparing her for an extraction & freezing of eggs. Mind you we didn't want to have kids now, but we did want to when we were ready.

After about $4,500 spent at the fertility center here alone doing SO many tests, etc... I decided to see a natural hormone specialist named Dr. Uzzi Reiss in LA.

He clearly explained what no other doctors even bothered to (or probably didn't even know). Birth control pills are basically forms of castration for women & the hormones lost are replaced with synthetic hormones that carry all sorts of side effects.

Her bodies own natural hormones were completely suppressed. When she stopped the pills her hormones weren't even detectable in standard blood tests.

Shortly after this test, Dr. Reiss prescribed her a natural hormone protocol. As of today her FSH level has stabilized (5). Not to mention she said she feels better than she has in 10 years... better than she can ever remember in her life... like a person.

Why am I writing this? Because I think it is very important that everyone here (men & women) NEVER believe what a doctor tells you. Do your own research.

2 doctors here said she was fine

2 "specialists" suggested she freeze her eggs because she was on her way to becoming sterile.

1 doctor said, this is what is happening in your body because of what you're taking. Stop.

So far I've referred my girlfriend, her mother, my mother & my sister to Dr. Reiss because hormone therapy does much more than help with fertility. All of their progress has been positive. They feel younger, better, have been able to stop taking other medications like prozac, evista (for bone loss), migraine medications, etc, etc.

I don't work for this guy, with this guy or anything. I just felt the need to share one of my experiences with him. He is one of the few docs that actually know what they're doing.

He's written some books that I think all women should read:

1. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Hormon...d_bxgy_b_img_b (50 reviews, 5 stars)

2. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Superw...8245932&sr=8-2 (his latest)

That was all :)

Informative thread!

I have never taken birth control pills because they scare the hell out of me. Not surprised at your post!

My mother died of cancer at age 38 and I was advised to not ever take those things because the hormones encourage cancer growth.

The thought of changing my body's natural process with drugs makes me sort of sick to my stomach.

Glad to hear the positive outcome with your family's situations. :)

I refuse to take any meds whatsoever. Birth control, anti depressants, tranquilizers, nothing. It's all about money and convincing people they need something they don't for the $$. It always comes out years later that whatever "miracle drug" for whatever is actually bad for you.

Great thread, btw!

glad to hear you ended up having a positive experience

for those who want to do anything medical related always sit down and talk with a good endocrinologist, youll avoid being fed poison and understand what you really need to do

I took one birth control pill one time and it made me feel so terrible I will never, ever do it again. Very few people even understand how they work and it's rarely explained properly. Basically they produce hormones which make your body operate as though it's in a perpetual state of pregnancy. Birth control pills are also shoved at women as a cure-all for all kinds of stuff.

I've went to 2 or 3 different endos over the years that ended up being hacks... at least the ones HMOs send you to, they want you in & out and their focus seems to always be primarily diabetes... it sucks because you want to trust these people.

Synthetic hormone replacement therapy has links to cancer development (was a big thing a while back for women that were on HRT after menopause). There is a huge difference compared to bio-identical hormones.

Synthetic hormones produce free radicals, etc that are toxic to your body... bio-identical hormones are identical to what your body produces. But they're not patentable... so no $ for drug companies = why you don't hear about them.

Having an optimal level of natural hormones is important on so many levels, physical, mental, all translating to a better quality of life.

Thanks for the testimonial and links . . . checking it out. I went off BC over a year ago to try to get pregnant and haven't been ovulating. My FSH levels were normal, but . . . yeah. Looks interesting.

My girlfriend takes BC and i was never crazy about it because of some of the things discussed here but there isn't much alternative. condoms break and aren't as effective as BC..you can't take it forever but what do other women do?

bloggingseo 12-02-2008 04:49 PM

Thanks a lot for posting this, quite interesting and I appreciate it.

My girls current form of BC is more progesterone (vaginal suppositories). It keeps the lining of the uterus thin enough that an egg can't implant itself. It's a nightly thing, but so far so good.. the doctor said he wouldn't guarantee it, but in his 20+ years of practice he hasn't had an issue.

Check out one of those books, he discusses BC in them as well.

Thank you so much for the info

Does Dr. Reiss only deal with fertility issues, or does he treat other issues as well?

andy83 12-03-2008 09:46 AM

sad but true, some docs actually recommend certain procedures that they can make $$ out of.. instead of some other procedures that they do not..

and sometimes this actually doesn't go down well with the patients, but who are the patients to know? most people just take the docs advise as it is.

I have an IUD and its the best! Other than be a little uncomfortable when the insert it or take it out its one of the most effective birth control methods and doesnt use hormones.

I was on the pill for quite a few years and ended up with 2 kids! I dont regret having them in the least but they didnt figure out until the 2nd pregnancy that hormonal methods dont work for me.

spermicide

when you don't want to use pills or devices, get some of that spermicidal lube or injectable gel.

Quote:

If a couple uses spermicides alone (not using condoms or another method) correctly every time they have intercourse, about 6% of them will become pregnant.
96% effective

Better to be in the 4% than risk infertility or other health issues. :)

the funny thing is i had to fight for the IUD. my doctor was against the idea. they normally suggest this form of birth control for women who have had children already. i found it completely weird.

Thats because back in the 70's when it was first introduced the older versions had a high rate of rejection among women that haven't given birth. They still prefer to only prescribe it to women that have had a child even though the original versions have long been discontinued.
