Sounds like you're pretty ignorant about steroid use/abuse.
Injecting certain steroids from reliable sources can be helpful and steroids are widely used to combat many medical conditions. Getting the steroids this way will cost a lot of money (unless you're sick and your insurance covers them), but it will be pretty safe. This is what I would put under steroid use, because you take the correct dosages and don't fuck up your kidneys, liver, etc. by injecting the substances directly into your bloodstream. The downsides of this kind of steroid use could be hair growth, temporary shrinking of your testicles and disqualification from sporting events.
If you want to get really jacked, there really is no way around using steroids so a lot of recreational lifters use them. The problem isn't that they use them, because clean steroid use is far more safe than many supplements you can legally purchase. The problem is when people are stupid, use shitty steroids (i.e. orally ingested or from bad sources with other shit mixed in) and then fuck themselves up. This is where you get the cliche that liver and kidney damage can be caused by steroids.
It's true, if you're not smart about what you're doing. However, there is no proof that safe steroid use will affect your body in any way that will kill you. I personally choose not to take steroids because I don't feel the need to, but making uneducated comments about someone else using them is pretty childish.
I'd be willing to bet your friend got sick because he wasn't being smart about how he was taking the steroids or how much of them he was taking. This can be applied to a lot of things though. Drinking one glass of wine a day is good for you, but drinking several bottles of wine each day is not.
Most people safely using steroids are probably healthier than most other people who smoke, do drugs, drink too much, etc. because they tend to be athletes worried about the shape their body is in.
Even if you take steroids, it won't automatically make you huge either. This is another misconception. The steroids will help you recover from your training faster and allow you to train harder more often. This means you will be able to build more muscle, but you also have to put in more work at the gym. At this point, you basically have to take some stuff to be competitive in most sports that require strength, speed, etc. It's not just bodybuilders taking steroids.
If steroids really meant certain death, professional athletes all over the world would be dropping like flies. So yeah, steroid
abuse is always bad, but steroid
use can be safe and beneficial under certain circumstances.
