It doesn't really matter that Margie Leigh's granddaughter, Laura, got the pink iPod she so desperately wanted last Christmas ? at age 4. For the now-5-year-old, pink is out this holiday, and purple is in.

Grandma in Kentucky will be buying her granddaughter in Virginia a purple iPod this Christmas for one reason ? its color
4 fucking years old? I wonder how her hearing will be by age 10.

MetaMan 12-07-2008 08:15 PM

She could play her ipod to high and if she is using the headphones that come with them they have been linked to hearing loss.

I'm amazed how many parents let their kids use iPods. Hearing is still developing during that time and I wouldn't fuck with it for anything.

kane 12-07-2008 08:25 PM

Because this grandparent (and probably her parents as well) spoils this kid does not mean that all American kids are stupid or will grow up to be stupid.

I'm sure no child outside of America has ever been spoiled.

Then the media takes hold of it and teaches other new parents that they should feel guilty if they are not doing the same.

I know not all, but you see the point. How many 100s of thousands of adults bought their homes on the high end on mortgages they really could not afford?

dav3 12-07-2008 08:29 PM

One thing is for sure, the grandmother is a dumbass for teaching the kid such petty values.

Drake 12-07-2008 08:36 PM

A kids got to accessories haha

And how many 100's of thousands of adults didn't buy their homes on high end mortgages that they couldn't afford? The answer is most of them and those people are now paying for the idiocy of a few. There are 10's of millions who saved, put a down payment on a house, have a fixed rate mortgage and pay their bills on time. The other day the news said that about 99% of people are still paying their mortgages and credit card bills and everything else on time. Here is a nice little story about that.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/econom...gs-march_N.htm

Nationwide 1 out of every 538 houses is in foreclosure. That means that about that about .2 percent are not. I'm not a mathematician, but I don't think .2 percent makes up all Americans. Those that are in foreclosure are hurting a lot of people and causing troubles, but they are not the only problem. What about the smart and educated people who went to college and got good jobs and made a lot of money then got greedy selling credit swaps that were based on loans made on houses that they knew would foreclosed on? These "educated" and "smart" people are just as much, if not more to blame. If they hadn't done that, the houses would have been foreclosed on and the banks giving out the mortgages would have gone under and someone else would have bought them. Instead, the fruit from the poison apple has caused everyone troubles.

But that is all off the point. Again, I restate my point. Because one person spoils their kid does not make all Americans dumb. Because 1 person in every 538 did something stupid and bought a house they couldn't afford does not make every American dumb.

And here is the thing. Most people will read that article and think that woman is stupid and that spoiling a kid like that is bad. Anyone who is going to feel "guilty" about not giving their kid everything they ask for, was going to feel that way whether they read that article or not.

children are a prime target for marketing. they are young and easily molded. if you sell the child, you've sold the parent. cartoons are nothing but long drawn out sales pitches for a product. people in the industry even refer to them as program length advertisements. star wars, ninja turtles, pokemon, whatever the hell kids watch now. dora the explorer or bob the builder. your children sit down every saturday morning for 5 hours of of nonstop advertising. they have society disabled against any type of resistance to the market. when you have these kids coming back and seeing this same shit hyped as the big thing over and over, watching the same tv shows, they are gonna jump on it like snap. xmas, birthdays, oh how could a parent or grandparent disappoint!

All my kids have iPods..

However, I've set the maximum volume at a reasonable level...
They have that option.

Darkland 12-07-2008 09:22 PM

I don't play into all that shit and I refuse to spoil my kids with the lastest gadgets. Hell, my son is 16 and he still doesn't have a cell phone. :2 cents:
