Anyone here ever quit smoking cigs?

I want to quit but I love it so much. I don't know what I'd do without it. If you quit, how did you do it? Patches? Gum? Other?

I get real irritable, too. What can cut down the effects of that?

JamesK 12-12-2008 01:53 PM

I quit every day.

Btw if you love smoking, you can't quit. You have to start hating it.

selena 12-12-2008 01:55 PM

I used the gum for a couple of months, then went off it cold turkey. That was over 6 years ago.

You can do it. :)

I smoked two packs of Marlboro Reds per day. I quit with the patch. I started out with a patch on each arm (one for each pack) and stepped down on the recommended schedule. It was not easy but the patch really helps take the edge off.

sexyclicks 12-12-2008 01:57 PM

patch works

I quit cold turkey after ten year. This was in 04. I had a really bad soar throat, stopped, never started after that.

DamageX 12-12-2008 01:59 PM

Several times. Cold turkey every time. I last quit on October 7, after a night of partying. Just didn't feel like smoking the day after and I decided I just wouldn't pick it back up. I still have a few packs of smokes sitting on the shelf in front of me. Oh and I loved smoking too, but for some reason I was just in the right mood for quitting. So if you want my advice, don't stress about quitting, when you're ready you'll quit. Hopefully not too late though. :)

If you want to quit without suffering from the abstinence this is the only way:

That's what a lot of friends have been telling me but they also tried to sell me on Welbutrin as well.

I did it 6 or 7 years ago.

This is what I did.

I sacked off work for 2 weeks. I got a fuckload of gum, candy, drinks and movies. I went to bed and I stayed there for about 3 days. If you can last 3 days without cigs your cravings will start to diminish. Then each day it got easier. After 2 or 3 weeks it was a piece of cake.

Forget patches and whatnot. Just totally cut them out and drain them out of your system. Drink plenty of water, sleep A LOT, and chew gum.

You're be good in about a month :thumbsup

Tom_PM 12-12-2008 02:19 PM

Yeah I did. I had a heart attack, and even restarted smoking after it. But I quit again a few months ago. I've posted about it before, but I stopped going to buy them, and smoked the butts from my ashtrays (yeah I know, but you want honest you got it) and when those were gone, I just fought through the urges.

Chantrix is funny because in my market, they advertise it, and law offices also advertise to sue chantix for all of it's crazy potential side effects.. I'm against taking drugs when 100% not needed, and even then I seek alternatives.. but to each their own.

Either way you need to observe the passing of your cig friend like it's a real funeral. It's over, let it rest and move on.

BTW: I'm 44 and smoked since I was 13.

My wife bought Chantix 3 months ago... I'm still looking at the full pack. I asked her if she was going to start taking them once... And she almost killed me. - Good luck.

Donfoolio 12-12-2008 02:38 PM

fourth year cold turkey. It was easy, all I did was think about what it does to me and it made it easy to say "fuck this shit!". Now if only I could do that for booze :winkwink:

People smoke near me but it rarely crosses my mind that I would want one. Only when it's my brand and I'm drunk. But still never even bothered to think about asking for one. For the rest of your life you will remember it but that is the price you pay for having ever done it.

i can't quit .. gum helps. Don't drink anything with caffeine either ...

Well yeah that's the only catch of the 'miracle drug', but I think it's well worth the try, you just have to be a bit careful with the side effects and absolutely STOP taking it as soon as you start feeling weird... just google 'chantix' for the side effects & the horror stories
:2 cents:

After she read it, hasn't smoked in 2+ years.

Kudles 12-13-2008 01:07 PM

I don't smoke

F-U-Jimmy 12-13-2008 01:25 PM

If you are serious, you can do what I did 20 years ago and have a simple painless laser treatment. Then it cost me around £2000.00 but it worked and I haven't had a fag or a ciggy since:1orglaugh. There are places all over the USA and its very effective 85% stop, but they do screen you very well if they think you are not serious or just looking for a magic spell they turn you away.

Here's a place in San Diego that has a great reputation and the costs now are down to $400 approximately. Good luck :thumbsup:thumbsup

I tried a few times, failed after every attempt

CarlosTheGaucho 12-13-2008 02:03 PM

I don't smoke since May or so, although I do one or two cigarettes occasionally when I'm in a bar and someone invites me.

Smoked for just about 4 years and started quite late, so maybe that's why it was so simple and I haven't really felt any serious physical urge.

I quit 3 years and 3 months ago after smoking for 9 years.

I went cold turkey, but I've heard some awesome things about that Chantix stuff.

You can do it. :)

I also used quitnet.org, really helped me. I was quit for 15 months, smoked at a bar while on vacation, and a week later, was still smoking. I thought I was strong enough to control my "social smoking", I was soooo wrong. lol

Btw, I just stopped cold turkey. Sucked for 3 days, but then it got easier after that. If you love smoking, you won't stop. You have to have SOME kind of desire to stop.

amvcdotcom 12-13-2008 02:22 PM

Chantix has caught my attention.

I still smoke after almost 30 years. My friend just stared on Chantix and is relaying info back to me on its effects (he's been smoking for 20 years). He explained (and I may not have this right) that Chantix is different from Zyban/Welbutrin in that Chantix does (or doesn't?) affect dopamine in your brain. Unlike the others which require a step-down to get off of them, Chantix leaves your system within 24 hours after stopping. Again, this is my understanding after it was described to me by another.

Another reason why Chantix has caught my attention is that my Group Health doctors have stopped using Welbutrin in their smoking cessation program and switched to Chantix...so I assume that must mean they like it better.

Not sure of the side effects though....I'm sure it's something horrible like "May cause explosive diarrhea, vomiting, Hot Dog Fingers, or death". :)

I asked him to describe the feeling for me and he said it makes him feel "ambivolent" towards smoking and that when he does smoke it does not give him any pleasure like before.

baddog 12-13-2008 02:24 PM

I quit twice.

The first time I just smoked a joint whenever I wanted a cigarette. The second time I just stopped smoking and told myself "no" whenever I thought I wanted a cigarette.
