Interesting Find
For the past couple of months, I have had some jackass, or series of them, who have been spamming one of my message boards. They are always from the same area, Enewetak, Kwajalein.
I have been blocking their IP's and banning them before they can even do their e-mail confirmation. Finally, tonight, I decide to look up where the fuck this place is since I had never heard of it, and wondering.. who has this much free time to make 30-50 accounts a day (before banning a lot of their IP's, now down to about 20-30 attempts) on some message board. After all, even if they slip through. The message is on the board for an hour maybe if that, and then they are banned, and all messages deleted. Seems like a serious waste of fucking time. All the same, found out where it was, and it was an interesting read. Especially for the tin foil hat club. http://maisonbisson.com/blog/post/10...ajalein-atoll/ http://www.smdc.army.mil/RTS.html http://www.smdc.army.mil/kwaj/EntryAutoInst.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Islands :disgust |
How do you know they are from that island? GeoIP or they provide the info themselves?

Even with them using countless proxies over all this time as I keep banning IP blocks. |
Creepy shit. But I wonder why they were spamming you. I shut down a forum I had going because of spammers like that once and never understood why anyone would waste so much time making massive accounts on a forum and spamming it to all hell when it had yet to even get any real members or even traffic...

Shit that must suck to have your forum ruined like that.
Are they posting regular spam like viagra and stuff? |

Especially when I block, and ban them. Whether they had made 1 post, or 100. A couple of clicks by me and their hours of spamming are deleted in less than 1 minute. They were running wild mean Gene until I started banning IP blocks. That cut it down. Now I ban, and block most of them before they even can do their e-mail confirmation for sign up. However, they still try. It seems like a pointless exercise when there are so many more effective ways to link bait, affiliate market, etc. |

The members report it, however, we have gotten it to the point it's pretty much dealt with before it ever can be reported. One may slip through here and there in the middle of the night, but most are dealt with before they can even post. |

I think they must use some form of automation. When I was dealing with this on my forum one day I banned allthe ip's and extensions and the next day I had 500 new members from similar .coms At that point the forum meant nothing to me and it was not worth my time so I closed it. But in the future I will need to do one again so I hope by then this stupid behavior is a thing of the past. |
What I dont get is why they go to the trouble of signing up, confirming email and posting just to have it deleted. Do you have a captcha in the signup form?
I could understand it if it was some bot posting like blog comment spamming... |

Fucking pointless madness. |

They have to register to post. Fill out all questions. Then captcha. Then e-mail confirm. So they go through all of that hassle, most of us will not even when you WANT to be member to sites. Then post their shit. Just to get it all removed in a few mouse clicks, and banned. Just to repeat it all over again on a daily basis. |
Does make you wonder who would go to the effort. Still, some ppl have a helluva lot of time on their hands!

That's insane .... i thought that these auto posters normally only attacked the forums without email verification/captcha. I had a forum ruined a few years back (before captcha was big) by the time I realised it was easier to close the forum than find and delete all of the spam
