how do you upgrade a wordpress blog?

Do i need to drag all the files accross or just some and will i loose my old widgets/thems/rss feeds?

sarad 12-17-2008 03:16 PM

I use a free plugin in called Wordpress Automatic Upgrade, then you just click a couple of buttons from your dashboard and its done. :)

Just overwrite all the current files on ftp with the updated ones (all except wp-config) and go to /wp-admin and it should ask to upgrade.

The Duck 12-17-2008 03:21 PM

With the new version they added an auto-update feature.

Sosa 12-17-2008 03:29 PM

auto update plugin is what I use

baddog 12-17-2008 03:33 PM

I would not recommend it. Seems to cause more troubles than it is worth.

sarad 12-17-2008 03:36 PM

I have upgraded to 2.7 - Love it!

DO NOT DO THIS!!!! Some of the versions are compatible this way, but many use different wp-config formats. Some of the time this works, others it will ruin the blog.

to be safe make a backup of the old blog... it's a HUGE pain in the in ass to repair a upgrade gone bad...

BSleazy 12-17-2008 04:03 PM

I follow the instructions from the wordpress site here and have never once had a problem.

don't have a one click upgrade with your host?

kmanrox 12-17-2008 04:10 PM

personally i prefer to use svn (subversion) for upgrading or reverting.. plus i always like to test the bleeding edge developer's version to see what's in store.

DVTimes 12-17-2008 04:10 PM

cool.

i will look into this.

starpimps 12-17-2008 04:11 PM

I don't. It was tough enough teaching new writers to use the pretty bland old admin...now that they made it look more Web 2.0, it just makes it tougher to show people how to use it.

What the hell do the writers need to log into WP for? Use BlogDesk...

TheSenator 12-17-2008 04:35 PM

I upgraded to 2.7 and only had problems with WP-Sticky plugin. I just had to upgrade to the latest WP-Sticky..

I love the new layout of 2.7

CIVMatt 12-17-2008 04:38 PM

fuck 2.7, everytime I upload a picture to a post i get, missing temp folder... wtf? Plus I can't find a rss plugin that works

HomerSimpson 12-17-2008 04:44 PM

automatic upgrade plugin...
but new 2.7 has that option built in so in future it will be one click upgrade...

TheDA 12-17-2008 04:51 PM

Back up the original stuff, follow the upgrade stuff on the wordpress site or use an upgrade plug-in, re-install the odd plug-in or two that are installed outside of wp-content/plug-ins.
