World's main internet cable cut near Egypt

Looks like half the world has lost their internet connections when a main sea cable was damaged.
It was just on the news.
Could take up to a week to repair

The SMW4 cable, also known as SEA-ME-WE 4or South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 cable network, connects 12 countries: Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy and France.

just finished a skype vid chat with someone in France so some part of the country must have internet access.

Anyone else using skpe getting spam request from dating sites? I've gotten two requests this morning one for fling and one for xxxblackbox both from people pushing the affiliate programs and not from actual users, if there are any real users on those sites. no big deal really just a bit annoying when anonymous chat request pop up while you're trying to get stuff done.

We can't bill most of those countries anyway. :2 cents:

I'm pretty sure that most of these countries can be re-routed. That's why the Internet was created in the first place; It's hard to kill it. If the main cable to France was cut, it still has many other connections in place.

And yes, I'm getting spammed daily on Skype for dating sites. Once or a twice a day. It's 10am here and I already got one this morning - the same exact text, just a different name and a different link.

I like the comment below the article on the bbc link...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7792688.stm

It reads:

I teach English at a high school in Sisaket. The last few days our connections have been very, very slow. Yesterday, when I was trying to teach some students how to use Limewire to download movies and songs, the connection seemed to be nearly non-existent. We thought that maybe the wire to our building had been damaged.

You expect them to pay for something they can get for free?

biskoppen 12-20-2008 01:47 PM

Cut the internet to the states end Europe for a full week and you'll have an economic collaps to talk about

I fully understand the 'Get it for free' part...

It just surprised me that it was actually being TAUGHT in schools...

9.00am - 10.00am 'Piracy class'... :2 cents:

that is unbelievable, but culturally I guess that explains why the third world webmasters don't even understand that there is a problem when they show their sites full of stolen content, it makes zero sense to them that anyone would even care about creative property
