Yes, it really is the Chinese character for evil. It is pronounced "aku" in Japanese. Aku-ma = the demon-god a.k.a. Lucifer.

Several years ago, a free-thinking, young Japanese couple named their child Akuma spawning huge controversy.

Imagine a kid in USA called Satan -- or Lucifier. Azrael maybe.
