New Year's Eve in Times Square

I am sure quite a few GFYers have done it. I would love to hear your experiences and especially recommendations on what and what not to do.

thanks in advance

tranza 12-29-2008 05:36 AM

First of all, don't kill, don't steal, don't look for others wife... Follow Jesus steps, hahahaha!
And I'm not blaspheming... :)

WebCashMaker 12-29-2008 05:44 AM

If you like standing in a coral for hours in the freezing cold. You will like it.

Sarah_Jayne 12-29-2008 05:47 AM

It always felt like one of things that probably sounded better than actually doing it. My sister went a few years ago and just said it was cold and crowded.

John-ACWM 12-29-2008 05:59 AM

What about staying with your friends and family and have a glass of champagne? That works for me

Cash 12-29-2008 07:05 AM

You have to freeze for hours there to get a good place within the Times Square ...

cardinalvices 12-29-2008 07:21 AM

you don't really have to freeze, get a bottle of champaigne in a paperbag and that should keep cozy for awhile

CaptainHowdy 12-29-2008 07:45 AM

I hate crowds so I wouldn't know...

that I am aware of.
thanks for the bump though :)

brand0n 12-29-2008 08:52 AM

id prefer to be in a lounge on a couch, warm with a capt n coke

RayVega 12-29-2008 09:59 AM

What to do?..don't do it. Crowded, cold, smelly, and the only thing you get to see is the asshole in front of you while going deaf from the roar of 250,000 assholes for no apparent reason.

I went three years in a row when I was a city cop...I was on the inside of the police line, making double overtime and I hated it. And, don't think it was because I wasn't drunk and fed...remember I was NYPD, we had booze, food and grabbed some ass too. Still would have rather been in a nice pub with my friends.

.

EscortBiz 12-29-2008 10:32 AM

depending on how the cities budget is that night bloomberg might force you to pay a standing tax

peeperpimp 12-29-2008 10:38 AM

Don't do it. It's not worth it.

NicAngel 12-29-2008 10:47 AM

looks claustrophobic, freezing, and annoying. i love events that advertise how many people will be there cuz then i know EXACTLY where NOT to go. a nice warm restaurant/pub with good friends is more fun to me.

undersoul 12-29-2008 10:51 AM

supposed to be cold and snowy this year in NYC for New Year's Eve

alexchechs 12-29-2008 11:01 AM

I have lived here in NYC and have never done it. Usually its just way too cold

Violetta 12-29-2008 11:03 AM

other side of the world!

Trax 12-29-2008 11:12 AM

lol... ok i get it... unfortunately my family wants to do it
so anything besides don't do it? :)

Holly 12-29-2008 11:20 AM

I've also felt like that might be one of those "before you die" things, but then I see the footage and I know I would probably lose my mind and shank someone. I hate crowds of drunk people so I'm guessing it would be my worst nightmare. I won't even go to a bar on New Year's Eve anymore.

Carry the least amount of "stuff" as possible (glasses, extra clothing etc.)

Put wallet or money in front pants pocket or inner chest pocket(never in rear pocket).

Make sure you have enough money for Bail ($250) and your ID on you, you never know what will happen and you want to be able to get out in two hours instead of two days should you get caught up in disorderly conduct or even a non violent misdemeanor. NYPD can give you what's called a DAT (desk appearance ticket) but only if you have ID.

keep alcohol in unmarked containers (paperbag is not enough if you piss off a cop or if he's a dick, unmarked bottles would have to go to the lab and cause him extra paperwork so he won't bother ticketing you). Open alcohol is technically illegal no matter if it's in a bag. Shit happens, some guy steps on your foot and you accidentally shove a cop, and he'll be looking to fuck you somehow. Cops hate this shit and are pissed to be there.

Keep any women in front of you or they will get groped. Try to get them to leave pocketbooks at home. This is also the easiest way to get in a fight...

Just a few from what I know.

Talk some sense into your family.

JamesK 12-29-2008 11:42 AM

Sounds like hell :1orglaugh

Donfoolio 12-29-2008 11:46 AM

I avoid any and all cattle unions and so should you. I been a NYC resident for 30 years and never went. It is so asinine for people to pack up like animals and freeze to watch some giant mystical ball fall from the sky as if to falsely usher in some bullshit belief your life will somehow magically change for the better and that you're all "doin it together yeah!". As a human you should do that every new DAY not year...

Marcus Aurelius 12-29-2008 11:47 AM

Send the kids to bed early, Lock yourself in the bedroom and watch the ball drop on TV while getting head from your wife. When the countdown begins time your blastoff and when it hits new years blow your load in her mouth and go to sleep. Greatest year end ever.

All well said Ray, right on the mark advice.

I did it once.... BIG mistake.

And once you realize that it sucks, it's hellish trying to get back out of there again, fighting your way through the crowds is very slow work and will almost get in you a fight 2 or 3 times, not to mention your girls ass getting grabbed.

Good luck.

i regret not having made dinner arrangements as sort of backup plan

As much as I think it sucks...if you already have plans, you should follow through. Now that you have low expectations, it probably will not be as bad as you think and considering there is currently no rain forcast, it would be better to experience it then to go on forever wondering what it is like.

I am sure you will agree with all of us after the fact...but being cold, and crushed, and ringing ears for two days is not as bad as wondering (in my opinion anyway). Stay safe, get drunk and have it under your belt. :2 cents:

HorseShit 12-29-2008 12:51 PM

I'll be reporting live for GFY from there

GTS Mark 12-29-2008 01:41 PM

I have done it twice...

Here are basically the rules...

1. You have to get there before 8pm otherwise the cops will close off the street and will make you walk around in an endless circle of barriers making you believe you have a chance to get in.

2. Bring beer because all the bars in time square are pretty much closed. We brought a backpack with us last time with 50+ beers (yes it was a large backpack haha!)

3. Be prepared to piss anywhere because there are no toilets or portopotties. My friend actually got kicked out one year for pissing on a wall and the cop was a nazi and was threatening to arrest him. There were like 50 guys pissing on a wall and he was the only one that was caught.

4. There really is nothing going on in time square other than a bunch of people standing around in the cold and waiting. We didn't see any bands or events going on, it's pretty boring unless you're hammered like we were.

5. Once the ball drops that's pretty much it, you head home

Anyways it's something to say you have done once in your life and I am glad I did it, but I would not do it again ;-)

Khulan 12-29-2008 01:49 PM

I wanted to go NYC every year but was not able to do it. Now I am much far away from NYC. Please share your experience once you were in NYC. Anyhow have a happy new year guys!
