Is there still business to be made at trade shows?
Do sponsors get there money back for throwing parties and giving away free stuff?
Back in the day it was a great way to brand yourself and get more traffic but are webmasters starting to be loyal to certain programs? It seems like everyoone talks at shows but when its time to close the deal it rarely happens. For me its just a big fun party now I dont even try to do biz at shows anymore:thumbsup |

yes a big fun party also |
I haven't been active for awhile but I think every single show brings in SOMETHING... Whether you meet someone in an elevator or in the bathroom, those 1 on 1 encounters can bring in new loyal affiliates. I just like getting to know new people. There's a million programs but if you get personal contact with new people, it always pays off eventually.

The only business that goes on at shows now are between the hookers and drug dealers.

for program owners yes, affiliates should avoid it like the plague, except for whales maybe

It will be interesting to see the turn out level at the shows in 2009.

I agree. Of course with the internet its easy to do biz without ever meeting anyone but I think you always have the edge and feel more comfortable dealing with someone you have actually met . :) |
You should talk to me at the internext, of course I'm looking for more traffic as everyone, but if you want a cool plug in for your members areas for an upsell, I'm in.

Yeah it's true that not everything has ever been accomplished that was talked about at the tradeshows, I stilll have things to fullfill from the last (this) year and it pisses me off.
But, it's going to get done, and that's what counts. |

People definitely did business at www.islandgathering.com ... Guess it depends on the show.

Yes I agree tony, it doesnt stop any deals taking place if you have never met the person, but l still think if you have met it can at times give you the edge and any advantage in a competitive market is always a bonus :thumbsup |
No business, just talk about free porn and tube sites.

this is how most shows goes
john: hi mark nice to meet you finally mark: john been looking forward discussing this ground floor opportunity with you john: thanks appreciate you getting me in on it mark: no problem thats the least I can do, basically its a revolutionizing...[plain old stupid shit some crap pps story] john: wow nice def gonna check it out sounds real good, I have so much traffic for that mark: yeah the site has been in dev. for over 6 years millions spent (meanwhile its some crap 3 page overused content tour and some xsale scam signup page linked with junk) John: mark we just redesigned our program too and released Cock&Ball Cash v2.9 we are hand picking affiliates and I can get you in mark: seriously that would be great I have many ways to send traffic to that, can you guys handle huge amounts of traffic? john: yeah the we use the biggest guys in the business we have 110% uptime and 14 oc3's under each desk mark: great youll be seeing some signups real soon john and mark leave the show they both where full of shit and nothing comes about it both can report back to their company how many people where in love with their concept and both can continue doing nothing for nobody until the industry spits them out, but not before they eat up some payroll at some other companies. Now is it possible to do real serious business at shows, well yeah but you have a better chance winning lotto than getting one penny out of a AVN show or magazine. Good luck people P.S. go to the show with the attitude of having a good time etc and it will be good, dont go expecting business DEF not this year |
If you're going to the shows with a mindset to accomplish business, you will. I've been to dozens of shows and the last show I attended, LA Webmaster Access in November, was one of my best 'business' shows ever.
RRRed made a great point - every interaction and new introduction pays off in the future too. So even if you don't see immediate results, it will come with time. |
tons to be made at mainstream trade.....
Huhhhh I mean yeah tons to be made at adult trade shows ;-) With that said I agree with myjah 110% |
I never really did much business right at the shows or right after the shows... over time is when it paid off for me. Getting to meet someone and then six months later you need something and you think back and it's "hey, so-and-so would be perfect for this"... you get in touch with them and bam, there you have it.
It's a lot easier to get by knowing people than not knowing people. Not every particular expense has an immediate return on investment, they all play their little part in the big picture. |
im there for the booze

Roger don't you start this same thread every six months?

If you give me a card I'll keep and check out the site later. That's about as far as I go. Always fin though. I mean in the real world when do you get to meet other people that do what you do? I always try to go when I can.
