Here is a suggestion to help improve gfy for 2009

Could the powers that be at gfy consider making the board more mobile friendly? I am on my iPhone right now and it's oh so slow.

I think you will appease many members like me that enjoy surfing the boards on their mobiles. Plus you could sell more advertising on the mobile version of the site. So long story short... more money for our friends at playboy :)

Thanks and happy new year everybody!!

Is there a vBulletin mod for this possibly? I completely second this motion!

No need for a mod, it's all in the vB Style, just need a very minimalist style. :thumbsup

You're so right. Just Googled it and saw a few very useful and awesome themes that work for the iPhone. It makes me want to put it on my mainstream forum :thumbsup

A more mobile friendly site would be nice. Plus they could earn more cash for mobile only adverts. GFY you're letting money sit on the table.

Iron Fist 12-31-2008 05:59 AM

Man if I ever get an iphone and surfed GFY at work, i'd get nothing done, but have a massive postcount! Hmm..

years ago (probably 5 or 6 years ago), gfy had a mobile version. it was ad free, and it worked great on my old blackberry back then. then lens for whatever reason had it disabled. moments in gfy history.

The cost of adding this functionality is pretty much nill, the added hosting cost is pretty much nothing.

There is only upside to this deal for playboy. :)

I think the downside would be that gfy advertisers won't be as attracted to mobile users. I can't see many webmasters who surf gfy joining a program thru their mobile device. So i think the value from ads would diminish so its easier bundling everyone together where the ad revenues are still the same then seperating the two.

Just my thoughts at least...

Well it's not like you would charge $2000-3000 per banner on the mobile site. I think the branding alone from seeing the mobile ads time and time again while surfing on your mobile would stir a webmaster into considering that sponsor.

I'm sure there are more than a few sponsor companies here that would pay $500-1000 per month to have premium ad space on the mobile version of GFY. It would be interesting if the powers that be at GFY ran the numbers on how many mobile surfers they have, they would probably be suprised.

Opera on Windows Mobile makes browsing the board a piece of cake from my Cell.

I would imagine that surfing on Safari for iPhone would be just as nice.

Regardless, enabling the vB text archive would actually be all we need.

Since when is the ad spot meant to attract webmasters? I mean, are there even webmasters on this board? Thought it was meant for branding only ;)

Last time I clicked a banner on GFY must have been years ago probably when I missed the search link and accidentally clicked it :2 cents:

You are so right, but I have joined programs after seeing them 100 times. Everyone is so tied up in clicks that people forget the value of branding.

look at it this way, clicks are like the six packs of pathmark soda for 99cents put at the register...an impulse buy. Branding is more like Coca Cola, a thought-out purchase. Who would you rather be? it may have taken Coca Cola a lot longer to get the sale but they make much more of them in the long term.

In the end you will probably drink a few of the pathmark cans and never buy again...but you'll always go back for Coke year after year.

:winkwink:

No doubt, but if I was a sponsor I would seriously consider looking into different ways of branding ;))

We didn't have a search function for three years, so I'm sure they're gonna jump right on the mobile thing.

I have a suggestion to make GFY better in 2009. Offer a one-click option to block an entire thread from ever showing up on your browser. Kind of a blanket "block user" option but applied to an entire thread.

So, if you never ever open a contest thread, you can click the button and you'll never see it again. If you don't care about JonClark asking for money, one-click and gone. If you don't want to see everyone's New Year's resolutions, one click and you won't. Hate threads about suggestions on how to make GFY better in 2009? Bye bye suggestion thread.

Allowing this option allows the people who enjoy every thread to enjoy them and those that don't, to customize their GFY experience thus making them more likely to spend more time on GFY in specific areas that interest them thus increasing the power of the advertising presented to them.

Now, I can see where this would lead to a decrease in banner views. So, GFY could set it up where instead of seeing a thread, you see a banner in that spot instead. GFY would get the power of the banner view but you wouldn't have to view any thread you don't want to view.

There are numerous reasons why this idea has issues but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

On a sidenote, I need some new affiliates this year. Are you an average or better affiliate? My site (sig) match up to your traffic in some way? Give it some consideration.

Ahhh fuck it, even if you're a sucky-ass affiliate, give us a shot anyway. :-)

Happy New Years to all.

Steve
