For those of you with SEO questions

Before you post here, so that people dont flame you., Do a little leg work on the question.

For instance I saw a thread asking about hyphens in the domains and SEO.. One way to get a basic answer is to look for one that is listed well in Google. 95%+ of your SE traffic will come from Google so worry only about that one for now.

So lets say you have a domain my-car.com ( that would be a great one by the way ) and you want to know if it can get listed real high for the term car. One way to find this out, is to google the word car, and then page though the listings. Did you find a domain with a - in it?? If so and its high ranked, and I would say top 20 is high, then you have your answer.

Hope this helps some of you guys...

I like the self-research method too.

pornguy 01-06-2009 02:15 PM

It helps you learn a bit and it might help you not feel sooooo foolish asking a question. BUT REMEMBER the ONLY foolish question is the one that is NOT asked.

Reverse engineering the engine and your competitors is what enables successful business people to continually rank different websites for different key terms. Without this ability you can still get rankings, but its from shooting in the dark that you have reached your target.

It sounds so cliche to say, that all your answers are in google itself but it is 100% true. This doesn't always mean that you "search your question", it means when you make any search, pay attention to how it returns them searches, and the logistics of how it did it. The way google functions is very simple, there is BILLIONS of search examples you can query it with to help you see it.

Well stated..

Also dont believe every thing that you read even if it comes from Google its self. Take what is said. Give it a shot, and that means on average of 90 days and if its not working modify what you did. Give it some time and then do it again. No one formula works for everyone.

I only have one domain with "-" in it and strangely out of all my blogs/domains, that one gets the most Google Images traffic.

Well said pornguy...I also feel that people should keep in mind Google's objective: To deliver the most relevant results based on the keyword(phrase) typed in and searched.

So, given that is their goal, how would they measure that? Good content, links, etc.

The rocket scientists at Google are smart and rational and just trying to weed out quality websites that "add" something to the Internet community from spammers...(2 cents)

So keeping what you just said in mind, You guys may want to consider how much to trust them on the tips and tricks they give out. If they are telling you HOW to manipulate their system, then are they really giving the best results to the surfers like that claim they are??

Just something to think about.

Hey pornguy,

Thanks for all the awesome info!

The tips and tricks G gives out aren't to manipulate some arbitrary system but to make sure serious business owners/webmasters are providing sites that surfers want to see. G's algorithms exist to give the best results per search, so if you follow G's rules/tips/tricks, you are going to give the surfer a better experience, and hence should rank higher in the SERPs. Of course you have to make the assumption that Google knows what surfers want, but I don't think that's a difficult assumption to make.

Just my :2 cents: about Google.

I helped a cleaning company in my area be ranked #1 in 4 spots, #7 in another, and always in the top 5 of local business results. If google sees more than 1000 or more links to a given company, and the others only a have a few hundred, than you will be ranked higher.

Put decent textual content on your site,
look at how the the top ranked websites in your niche have setup their source and copy them,
back links are a must, so post on multiple forums, blogs, yahoo news groups, and participate in mailing lists that get archived.

Learn how to google jack and develop link farms that can be rotated.

All in all though... the better your content, the more money you will make. I have friends that make large cash and I help a few of them now and then, so I know what I am saying works.
