Personal phone calls on company time WTF!!!

Seems like everywhere I go someone is on the phone :disgust

The other day I was in the pet store and I needed some help finding something.
I find a sales girl that's talking on her cell and tell her what I'm looking for. She has me follow her over to the right place while she continues to talk on the phone. I had a question about the product so she finally says " I've got to go honey, I'll see ya after work. Luv ya bye " and hangs up.

I walk into Target and notice that the security man is leaning against the wall with his back to the door, head down and smiling while talking on his cell.

I walk into sears and a sales girl was sitting on the floor sorting clothes while talking on her cell and blocking the aisle so I had to walk around her to shop.

I walk into 7-11 to grab a drink and there is a long line at the register. The girl behind the counter is talking on her cell with one hand while doing transactions with the other.

I would think that if you are on company time you should be giving 100% to your job. Personal calls should be left to breaks and lunch time. Is it just me or is this now acceptable work place behavior?

AaronM 01-06-2009 10:31 AM

Yep.

I fully agree.

Tom_PM 01-06-2009 10:31 AM

Of course it's NOT acceptable but nobody complains about it. Did you complain to any of the stores managers or higher? Most people simply dont care enough to lift a finger.

I dont feel like getting shanked as i walk out to my car.

I stopped in McDonalds once and the female Manager was on her cell taking a personal call and then proceeded to set her phone down on a tray on the counter and kept checking it for messages or whatever.

If the manager is doing it ........

If i find anyone working for me, in my Cafe's / Restaurants using the cell phone and its not an emergency they are fired on the spot. They know up front its not acceptable, just like not turning up for work is grounds for immediate dismissal. :disgust

Cyndalie 01-06-2009 10:45 AM

I onced worked with a web designer that was either texting under his desk with his girlfriend all day long our going outside to talk to her. After a month he was fired for it.

brassmonkey 01-06-2009 10:46 AM

i went in circle k and the lady was on the phone i told her to get the fuck off the phone

Doctor Dre 01-06-2009 10:47 AM

That's why everyone you just mentioned makes close to minimum wage.

Peaches 01-06-2009 10:48 AM

I would bet 95% of employees spend company time doing personal stuff on the internet. Personal calls are so 1990's ;)

That happened to me once at a Taco Bell. My family walked up to order and the kid was talking on his cell. I cleared my throat. Then the little fucker had the balls to hold up a finger and motion for me to hold on. At that point I said,"Hang that GOD DAMN phone up and take our order." He complied immediately... Afterwards I wrote the company, gave the store # and the kids name. Haven't seen him in there since.

KillerK 01-06-2009 10:58 AM

go Obama! He will probably pass something that makes it so you can't fire someone due to a cell phone.

KeepUpWithJones 01-06-2009 11:02 AM

If I worked at 7-11, I would not care about my job because my job does not care about me. I'd chat on the phone all day long if it made my day go faster because I'm just a nobody. If I were in a position that matters like a dentist or engineer, I would not talk on the phone.

Tom_PM 01-06-2009 11:03 AM

If the manager is doing it, go to the district manager. If the district manager is a dick, go to the regional manager. If the regional manager doesnt take your call, go to the divisional vice president. And if you're like my girlfriend who got shafted by home depot one year and NOBODY would satisfy her, you call the fucking president and he mails you a personal letter of apology with a nice fat gift card.

BradM 01-06-2009 11:06 AM

They all make $6 an hour. They 1 don't give a fuck and 2 even if they did they are too stupid to realize what they did wrong. That's why they make $6 an hour.

tony286 01-06-2009 11:11 AM

Its crazy, it should be cell phones are shut off while you are at work. I went to a clothing store it was just me ,my wife and the salesgirl. The sales girl is talking on the phone the whole time not paying any attention to us. She was planning her saturday night. She only gave us a moment when we were leaving. I said its ok your busy and left.

It's not like they are doing it secretly. They are doing it out in the open and where it matters the most, face to face with the customer. They all have a boss or manager that
these days don't seem to mind so that's why I was wondering if it's become acceptable.

Were you on the phone just now when you typed in your first post on GFY while you were at work :winkwink:

normally at this point i would assume he stuck something in your food to make you sick , but then i noticed it was taco bell , so they already added it :winkwink:

You clearly miss the point. They don't give a FUCK. They are in a position where they don't care at all. That comes from having a crap job, being raised without the ability to respect fellow people etc etc.

It's the modern world. NO ONE cares anymore - and guys like you and me are stuck looking into the glass bubble going... what the hell is going on? But it's normal to THEM.

Peaches 01-06-2009 11:32 AM

Everyone I've ever worked with in a corporate environment has used the phone (and later, the internet) for personal use. Ya'll are acting like it's only minimum wage earners ;) Heck, there are people in this industry who are running entire side businesses on their employer's time.

pornguy 01-06-2009 11:38 AM

Just tell them to get the fuck off the phone..

I can see how the minimum wage worker wouldn't know any better and not care but I would think a manager WOULD know better as they are in a managerial position and such behavior would be counter productive. If we are at the point where managers don't care then we are fucked.

It would seem like a manager of McDonalds or 7-11 make enough with pay and benefits to care about their job.

Paranoid much? He was on register, not making our food. Their kitchen is in full view and you can watch everything they are doing. And knowing what assholes do in the fast food industry if you piss them off I just stood their watching everything they did and mad dogged them the whole time.

BTW, I worked there back in the day so not sure what you mean by already added it. But I suppose you have a better clue what ALL those 1,000's of Taco Bells across the US are doing though, right.

I don't think that the point here is using personal cell phones during work time, it's doing so at the moment when you need to be interacting with a customer or client. THAT is the difference, and it's a big one IMO.

:2 cents:

czarina 01-06-2009 11:46 AM

It's an epidemic! I stopped going to a really good beautician I had because she would stop 9 times in the middle of every haircut to talk on the phone. It was just ridiculous!

I can understand that but most of it is going on behind closed doors in an office or in a cubicle. What I find more disturbing is the fact that it is allowed out in the open in a business where the person on the phone must interact with the customer and make the phone call a higher priority even though it's personal.

:2 cents:

Agreed - but just because you don't "see" the executive's secretary having to get the phone call from a customer because said executive is talking to his wife/girlfriend/posting on a personal message board/jacking off at porn :winkwink: doesn't mean it's not happening A LOT. I know my brother's wife calls him at least 5 times a day, lol.

If I walk in and someone's chatting on the phone and doesn't immediately get off I walk out. I don't have that option with a corporate worker because I don't know WHY s/he can't talk to me, just that they're "unavailable".

My point is that this is a problem throughout the entire workforce - just not just the burger flipper, so saying they're doing this because they don't make a lot of money and that's why they don't care isn't correct, IMHO.

Um how many people over the years have used GFY on company time? And ICQ on company time... lol

:2 cents:

Although I agree with that in the context of this thread but I find no difference between goofing off on the phone with or without the presence of a customer. Maybe I am just old school but if you got time to lean you got time to clean. If that needs translated, If you got time to goof off then you most certainly got time to be doing more work.

This is the sad state of todays youth. They can't think for themselves, they want led around by the hand and shown or told what to do and when. They have no clue what work really is and when you jump on them about it they act like they are being unfairly treated in some way.

Vicious_B 01-06-2009 12:11 PM

There is no excuse asking a customer to hold on while you are on an obviously personal phone call. If you are talking to a customer on the phone thats understandable but chit chatting with your friend while I am standing there waiting for service is a sure fire way for me to turn around and walk out.

hypedough 01-06-2009 12:15 PM

People think now that cell phones are so commonplace that it's okay to be on personal calls all the time. It's rude and annoying as hell as a consumer.

Managers care even *less* than the temp staff. They can see their life in 7-11, paved out in front of them. Why should they give a fuck about some impatient fuck in a suit who wants a slurpee?

bronco67 01-06-2009 02:13 PM

Anyone want to argue against the notion that maybe the overuse of internet, cellphones, mp3 players, PSP's and small gadgetry in general may be accounting for many lost/crappy man hours which is causing a domino effect on the nation's economy, which in turn will bring the US of A down eventually?

Just a random thought. All of that fucking around has to have some kind of effect.

BTW, I noticed it at the last office job I had, and it got worse in the last few years. There was this little Asian dude that talked on the phone 80% of the day, and his work was shit. As icing on the cake, during his inane phone conversations, he giggled like a little schoolgirl bitch and made me almost strangle him to death.

I used to get slurpee all over my suit before they invented that dome top

.

I agree that it must account for a huge loss in productivity and I'm sure many companies are aware of it and attempt to deal with it. I don't think it's as big a threat to the stability of the U.S. as the seriously incompetent public school system.

The education system should be of the highest priority. If you can't give the future thinkers a chance to learn and grow than the futures problems won't be solved. Right now with the kids today I see us going backwards. How far only time will tell.

I'm married to a teacher, so believe me, I know this.

But I don't even need her to tell me, that almost anyone under 20 is an asshole which makes me scared of getting old.

OG LennyT 01-06-2009 02:42 PM

If you're really that worried about some minimum wager on "company time" using their cellphone you should be running one of those fast food / retail dives. Why do so many people feel the need to police company policy at a service location? You are the fucking customer, not God, not Jesus...

I could care less. Just get me what I need flunky, I don't want to be your boss nor do I want to even talk to your fucking boss.

psbfo 01-06-2009 02:44 PM

As I was standing in line at a busy store over Christmas, the customer being served answered his phone and left the rest of the line waiting. When the salesperson tried to serve someone else in the meantime, customer #1 yells at him because he's 'being served'.

He stormed out of the store empty-handed, cursing and swearing and promising to never come back after the store manager kindly asked him to stop wasting the time of his salesperson and the other 20 or so of us patiently waiting in line. :1orglaugh

I don't blame the teachers. They chose that profession because they wanted to guide
and enrich the lives of others and give children a good foundation on which to build their adult lives.
Their heart is in the right place it's just that their hands are tied.

I get really pissed when I hear about how a teacher had to open her own wallet to pay for school supplies so the students
wouldn't have to go without due to a screwed up educational system.

I'm always bitchin about that one. She makes a giant trip to the teacher warehouse before each school year and spends about 200 bucks. Then during the year, there's all the little parties she funds, odd books to buy here and there. It sucks.

I think it's a screwed up city budget you are referring to.. city taxes pay teacher salaries, supplies in this case.. if the district superintendent doesn't have the funds, the teachers will pay for 'extra' supplies and even essential supplies in this case..
