I'm watching an amazing example of the spread of information online right now.

A short while ago, some girl posted anonymously in a discussion about long distance relationships on an image board that she cheated on her boyfriend several times. She revealed that they have been in a long distance relationship for 3 years, that he studies at UCLA, and that she lives in Ohio.

That was a mistake.

So, at this very moment, I'm witnessing hundreds of people across a bunch of different websites trying to expose the girl in question. Undoubtedly, they'll become thousands instead of hundreds in a matter of days, and they'll inevitably succeed.


The truly interesting part in all of this is just how quickly people will start spreading information when they find a somewhat appealing cause, and the role the social networks (youtube, facebook, myspace) play in all of this. Harness that power for profit, and you'll be a very rich man indeed :thumbsup

(the actual story here isn't particularly interesting or relevant, of course - the flows of information, on the other hand, are awesomely revealing from a business perspective)

So true..... internet is the fastest media there is made by regular people.

i feel you.. communication has always amazed me.. before the net amazed me, CB radios amazed me.. communications are a very powerful force... i made a viral blog a month ago, and now due to social bookmarking and word of mouth and some other factors, its grown to over 7k unqs a day with no promotion.. i love seeing the referers, i visit the sites to see the phenomenon in action...
