Getting a laptop

I need one before the holidays. My friend recommended the Toshiba Satellite 1100-S101 http://www.computers4sure.com/produc...affid=10000039

multisexsite 11-14-2002 09:50 AM

I recommend Dell or Gateway, I would never buy anywhere except straight from the Manufacturer.

Undutchable 11-14-2002 10:13 AM

I own a dell, very nice piece of equipment and excellent support

sweetcuties 11-14-2002 10:17 AM

I've got a Gateway desktop but I'd like to keep the price under $1,500. I need something next week.

I just bought a DeskNote, it's a new type of Laptop, it's a Real P4 Processor not a Mobile P4 and it has real DDR. So you could switch the ram and CPU from your Desknote to your PC.

I got a
-P4 1.8 Ghz
-256 DDR ram
- 20 Gig HD
-Ion lithion battery
-15 inch LCD
-DVD/CDWR combo
all for the price of $1700 :) just got it 2 days ago

it rocks, i bench tested VS a PC and i was the same power just the HD was a little slower then the PC.

Comes with 4 USB, S-Video out, FireWire, and those other plugs

I've got a Gateway laptop that's been an absolute 3500 dollar piece of shit, stay away from them....monitor fucks up sometimes, DVD drive has been replaced and still rarely works, etc. etc.

Oh, another note, I'm selling a like new Solo 5100 if anyone's interested (near mint condition) :Graucho

BVF 11-14-2002 11:57 AM

I'm using a Sony VAIO....it's pretty nice...I like the combination CD-RW/DVD drive....

DTK 11-14-2002 11:57 AM

I use a Sony Vaio as well...definitely satisfied. I've used toshiba tecra in the past...good machine as well.

Dunno, just something basic so I can back up my files, check e-mail etc. I don't need anything fancy... my desktop is kick ass.

gornyhuy 11-14-2002 01:30 PM

A guy I know uses a Toshiba laptop, now granted its about 3 years old, but it is a piece of shit. touch pad button broken, bunch of hardware problems, and their support website for drivers etc just SUCKs.

my :2 cents:

Go for a dell or gateway or sony.

netstarz 11-14-2002 01:34 PM

We have two toshiba laptops. Both less than a year old. Had problems with the first one but they took care of it nicely and in less than 4 days. Both are running 24/7 for the most part now with no problems. Also have a Dell .......cant beat that either. Just don't go with the cheapest of whatever brand you get.

GTS Mark 11-14-2002 02:54 PM

I've got a Compaq Presario 720ca

Silver case
1.1 ghz
256 mb ram
20 gig hard drive
dvd
16 meg video
15" screen
JBL audio
ethernet
wireless optical mouse
blah, blah, blah!

It's a nice unit

I ahve been using Dell Laptops for years, short of going to a Macintosh I don'y thnk you can find better!

The new Mac with System 10.2 is hot Unix with a Mac interface. If the software you want will run on it I would give it a look.

Just remember Ellen want's you to go Apple

Try a Dell 2650. Its around the same price range you're shopping in but sports a genuine Intel 1.7 Ghz M class processor 20 GB harddrive and free CDRW upgrade. I own one and am happy with it.

Jamie 11-14-2002 03:01 PM

I have the Sony Vaio PC-fx370, its about a year old. The son'y have the clearest and brightest screens IMO.

The combo cd/CDRW is very cool and I was able to get the sony under $1500 last year. I'm sure you can find something comprabable today.

RottenPug 11-14-2002 03:08 PM

I am using a Fujitsu p2000 Not a great workstation but great when you are on the road has everything you need built in.

If you do buy upgrade the ram. :)

Dell:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Shark 11-14-2002 08:51 PM

I bought a Dell Inspiron early last year, I'm very happy with it. :thumbsup

KRL 11-14-2002 11:45 PM

3 friends of mine got Dells and they are really nice. Another just got top of the line Toshiba and that one's sweet too.

pimplink 11-15-2002 01:03 AM

Quick note on Dells: If your system keeps crashing or freezing, its because of an outdated version of your Nvidia graphics driver. Go to Nvidia's website and download the latest version [4xxx] of the driver and you should be okay. No need to reinstall the OS.

Wouldn't having a real P4 chip be an absolute drain when you're running on battery power? How long can you last on the battery?

Vendot 11-15-2002 08:50 AM

No-ones mentioned the IBM Thinkpad T20 range. Awesome piece.....

But I think I pretty much go with the consensus on Dell products are being the top of the range. They're both tops but I'd chose Dell over Gateway any day. Both have awesome support.
