Seems most of these are like that these days. Does your cable modem not have a built in firewall as well?

on my office and home networks i have a software firewall for each pc and all of them are behind a router.

why is one of your pcs using a dedicated cable modem? no idea whats up but as long as u have a firewall up (software) the hardware one is just an extra layer of protection. you should do fine having just one. but both is better if you do have sensitive data on that pc

edit : the router has a built in firewall (forgot to mention)

It does not which is why I go from my modem to the router

I just let them in... Share and share alike is my motto.

Eww... first thing I do is set up the cable modem as a gateway, screw it's router capabilities. I want EVERYTHING going through that modem so that I can manage things myself.

I can never get a cable/adsl modem to let traffic through the way they are supposed to. They always cause headaches or limit traffic somehow. Once it's all free to pass, I'm better able to manage it with my own router.

As for the original question, go with a hardware firewall if you can because in this day and age, computers come and go far too quickly and easily. Set up the hardware and maintain it and be happy.... otherwise you'll forever be installing your software on every computer you add or replace from here on out... which can happen quite frequently.

as you have seen "24" you know how important firewall security is

If you use a software firewall, the packets are already hitting the stack, then are processed and accepted/rejected. This means your computer is still vulnerable to attacks. Use a hardware firewall, it will prevent the packets from even reaching your system.
