looking for a unique type of monitor

hard to describe.... something that fits into a rackspace, that could sort of fold down and slide in and out on a drawer type thing.... so, like if I pull out the tray, the monitor would fold up so it could be used, and then folded back down and slid back into the rack out of the way....

is there such a beast anywhere?

Amputate Your Head 11-14-2002 05:31 PM

something like this:

except I don't think this one folds down flat or anything....

I think this be it:

kinda pricey though considering the size of the screen....

Anyone that does, do you prefer the fold down screens or the fixed mount?

That's the one I was gonna suggest but just cuz it's the only one I've ever seen. The first one you posted doesn't look like it's worth it.

I know that wasn't much help but I will ask my techie buddy tomorrow if he knows any others.

I think someone makes a rack mount for Apple's 17" LCD. I am happy with the monitor, so it might work well for what you are looking for. Have to do a google search on the mount, though.

They're messing with you.

Amputate Your Head 11-14-2002 06:53 PM

hehe.... most of the rackmount cases (4U) are like, $399, and you can get a whole freaking system WITH the case for like $799....

what a ripoff scam on those cases...

Amputate Your Head 11-14-2002 07:03 PM

good stuff on eBay too, but nobody will ship to Hawai'i... :(

Amputate Your Head 11-14-2002 07:35 PM

okay.... I think I'm prety much sold on this monitor: http://www.touchscreens.com/lcdsa151-rm.html even though it's 8 freaking rack units.... still pretty sharp.

now, for a case and keyboard tray.... :)

We actually use roll around carts in our data center, however, we do have a monitor and keyboard setting on a tray with a 50 foot cable that can reach 1/2 of the servers in our center. It's mostly used for our Windows clusters though. We use the carts (appropriately called "crash carts" :) for everything else...

well, this stuff is all for my Middle Atlantic audio rack... on display in the main living area... not work computer stuff.... I wanna put a system in the rack to link to the audio (and network to the other systems in the office) so I can load up mp3's and pipe it through the house... rather than being dependant on an office system... so, I'm looking for the nice anodized black components... I don't really need the system itself to do much more work other than play the mp3s, so it doesn't need to be a killer system or anything.... very basic. The audio gear will take over from there and amplify and adjust all the sound before final output.

this looks like about as good as it's gonna get for a keyboard solution: http://store.yahoo.com/kvm-switch/ac-820kdm.html

looks good, and it's fairly cheap....

I asked my geek yesterday and he was no help.
Sometimes tech guys are too smart for their own good.

Anyway... whatever you decide..
Post pics of that setup when you get it rollin' I'd love to see how it all ends up looking.
