Is Cancun Still A Great Place To Go On Vacation ???

I know a bit about it, and hear mostly good reports.

Any bad things about it ??

Where would you recommend to stay ??

And any other info please. :thumbsup

stay at any of the riu hotels, great food, drinks and service
very close to the shops
if you are bringing kids then stay at the Presidente, it has the calm part of the sea and a wide beach
take the local bus at avenida kukulkan (all the hotels are in this big avenue), dont spend in taxis unless you want to go the main downtown
buen viaje amigou!

Cheers bro!

Scott. Tammix is about right, but even going into town you can take the bus. Or call me if you dont mind riding in the car with my son..

If you come, some MUST see's are Tulum Ruins.. They have a beach so take a bag towel suntan lotion, as well as a camera.

Also xcaret or Xel Ha. Both are great parks.. If you stay more than just a few days, a trip Via Bus to Chichen Itza is also a must.

Sounds good.

Yeah it would be 14 days we go for. It's a long journey so might aswell make the most of it, with plenty to see and do! :thumbsup

Don't forget a quick ferry ride to Cozumel to do some great diving. I went there about 20 years ago after the Hurricane and imagine its built up to some degree but those were the highlights and stepping on a broken bottle barefoot.

The last time I was down there we rented a house south of Cancun near Tulum. It was affordable for a weeks stay and very spacious. We pretty much had a private beach and it was right out our front door. We had a rental car to drive into Cancun (30 mins) and took the ferry to Cozumel.

I didn't want to fly to another country just to be around thousands of US tourists. haha

Even better is the Mayan Riviera (about an hour or so south ofCancun intl. airport) :thumbsup

I second the RIU resorts.

A rent-a-car is a good idea. The distances are not that far.
Me and my GF did the Yucatan tour last November for 2 weeks.
The temples and pyramids you don't wanna miss! Playa del carmen was nice, Cancun was too much concrete IMHO, Tulum is the most quite & romantic place, the cenotes near Tulum are great to see and Chichen Itza has a magical "thing" when you are there.
Cozumel is great for diving indeed.
If you need any travel plans, hotel or restaurant recommendations, just drop me an email and I would be glad to share our experiences there and give you some pics of the area/hotels/etc. (my GF studied tourism...)

I prefer Cabo San Lucas ... but it does depend on what you are looking for

evildick 01-20-2009 08:51 PM

The local media is making it sound like if you go there to get drunk, you are going to be targeted by the police or other robbers.... we had a few Canadian tourists get killed lately.

Are they just exaggerating? Is it still a safe place to vacation even if you tend to drink a little too much? I'd hate to stumble out of a bar and have a couple mexican cops with machine guns decide they want my wallet.

I'm with RobFantasy. You can't beat ME at Melia. One of the best hotels I've stayed at. The staff is great. The Adult poolside is great. Get the package with the morning Buffet (Trust me...best buffet you'll see ever every day).

Hint: Grab several bottles of duty free LITER liquors of choice at airport. You will need them. Or go down the road about 1/4 mile and get them at the local stores. Poolside drinks can add up. Poolside food is good, however. Go elsewhere for evening food. Find Marianna (I think that's her name). Give her $40 and tell her to set you up at the best (Reserved) spots at the adult pool. You will be set for the week / weekend.

Hasta,
Scott
