GFY parents with kids under 12...

What are your kids reading? I am working with a friend to try to get her two kids (a boy and a girl) into reading more. They are both under 12..youngest is 7. If you have kids that age what are the books that they are reading and enjoying?

MikeSmoke 01-22-2009 04:29 AM

This probably won't help - but my daughter is 11 months old, and her favorite book is "Elmer's Day" --- she loves turning to the page where Elmer the elephant visits his friend Lion --- she points to the lion and roars loudly, and then breaks into giggles :1orglaugh

Maybe try things like charlotte's web.. if they are girls, judy blume is good for that age group too. (9-10)

HorseShit 01-22-2009 06:07 AM

None of you know what protection is

PurrrsianPussyKat 01-22-2009 06:09 AM

pornguy 01-22-2009 06:24 AM

my son is 3 and trying to read. But for now its any book about trucks and cars or the itsy bitsy spider or anything like that.

Sam Granger 01-22-2009 06:27 AM

You'd be best off posting a thread in the sell and buy thread jdavid. Anyway, regarding books for the boy, try Jennings and Darbishire. I loved it when I was that age.

My daughter is 10. She's presently reading the Twilight series, and she recently finished the Heartland series.

The key is actually to get books in a subject that the kids like. And one thing that works well is you set up a night time bed rule. Bed time is bed time, but they can stay up as long as they want so long as they are reading and in bed. My daughter usually reads an hour each night before getting tired and turning her light off.

My son is 7 and he LOVES Captain Underpaints, too. He has the Goosebumps books, too.

BVF 01-22-2009 07:01 AM

If it's a girl, she might like the American Girl series of books...My daughter has read all of them...

Joe BrainCash 01-22-2009 07:06 AM

This won't really help Sarah but my son is 2 and he likes when I read him:

-The Jungle Book ( Mowgli)
-Dumbo
-Jack and the Giant Bean stock
-the Three Little Pigs

I'm expecting a daughter in 6 weeks! :)

Isn't life beautiful?

Kristian 01-22-2009 07:09 AM

My daughter's 8. She's currently reading and loving Artemis Fowle. She also loves the Harry Potter series. She devoured Daniel X for Christmas (a James Patterson for kids).

I'm around large groups of girls on an almost daily basis and they are ALL reading the Twilight books. It's all Edward Cullen, all the time.

About 50 of them went to a midnight showing (on a school night) the day the movie opened. Before Christmas, we had to travel together on a bus and stay in a hotel for 3 days. Four of them brought LIFE SIZE cardboard cutouts of Edward Cullen. They drug those things around everywhere we went and took about 10,000 pictures with them. I've also noticed that all their email, facebook, and myspace names now have 'Edward', 'Bella', 'Vamp', or 'Sparkle' in it.

Stephenie Meyer is going to be unbelievably rich.

Sarah_Jayne 01-22-2009 07:33 AM

The whole Twilight thing makes me feel old because it is pretty much the first kid craze to totally pass me by. I didn't even know about them until the film.

E$_manager 01-22-2009 07:35 AM

harry potter or something similar ....
adventures, fantastic, history

NikKay 01-22-2009 07:43 AM

My daughter is 13 and lovedlovedloved the whole Twilight series. She's loved everything by Scott Westerfield as well.

My 7-year-old is digging the oldie but goodie "Choose your own Adventure" books. It's really fun to see him getting into reading FINALLY!

I find books by looking on Amazon for recommendations from the books I already know they like. So far, that's worked out really well.

Rebel D 01-22-2009 08:08 AM

My kids are younger as well. Mine loves Monkey and me, Scaredy Squirell Series and the Julius the monkey series.
If you want a boy to read more i remember the old Choose your own adventure(for the novice) and the Fighting Fantasy books. Reading and gaming at the same time.

I am not sure if they are around anymore though

MRock 01-22-2009 09:00 AM

I take my 4 year old to the library every week and we check out 10 new books. I put her in the appropriate section and let her choose what she wants to read. I read her 2 books every night before she goes to bed. The library is an amazingly undervalued resource ...

sexandcash 01-22-2009 09:13 AM

hey sarah :)
I don't have kids....but I do have younger cousins, etc.
12 year old girls would probably love reading the Sweet Valley Twins//High Series. Also my younger cousins still read the babysitter's club. Those were good ones I remember.

3 cheers to that...parents should spend less time sticking their kids in front of the boob tube and get them in the library from a young age. I remember when I was a reader they always had these cool reading clubs. They'd give you books, stickers and even free food from In-N-Out if you read so many books. Was a great idea.
Kids should be taught to love to read. I'm so glad I was.

My little boy SWEARS he's reading Playboy for the articles.

salesqueenxxx 01-22-2009 09:44 AM

My 5 year old son loves to read all Dr. Seuss books! :thumbsup

LAJ 01-22-2009 09:46 AM

My boy is 5 and really turning into a great reader. Got him on old school stuff like Dr. Seuss and Richard Scarry and all those golden books. He also likes The Olivia, Mercy Watson and Charlie & Lola and anything by Mo Willems books.

Noe 01-22-2009 10:03 AM

Here is an excellent resource to find appealing books for kids according to age http://www.readkiddoread.com/home

This resource site was created by the popular fiction novel writer, James Patterson. Apparantly his son hated to read which is why he created the site.

Yeah its pretty wild how quickly the Twilight series took off.

Rochard 01-22-2009 10:11 AM

We make weekly trips to the local library, but last weekend I had to go by myself. I was sure to pick a book for my daughter. I got "Jingle Bells, homework smells". Seriously. Cute little book.

My son is almost three years old and he loves: Dikkie Dik
Google it :) Only pictures, No words, only the story you as parent is telling him so he can sleep well. :)
He turns the pages...
That's in my opinion for the best way to learn him to read books.
:2 cents:

"Dag Dikkie Dik, tot de volgende keer...."
All the Dutch webbies know this line... ;)

AnniKN 01-22-2009 12:17 PM

Um, when I was ~10 my fave book was I, Robot and a compilation of Asimov short stories, maybe they'll like it?

Loki 01-22-2009 12:33 PM

My 8/yo daughter reads ANYTHING by R.L.Stine, and (very) random things put out by Scholastic.

Devin-GTS Choose Your Own Adventure books used to be my fav books as a kid, I'm gonna dig some of them up and see if she likes those.

I really think that's a good way to learn reading/books, because you give a real passion from yourself to your own kid(s). When they notice you're really interested in a story, they will want to hear/learn about it. And maybe take it over.
That's parenting in my opinion. :D

firecracker 01-23-2009 05:04 PM

I love the mouse and motorcycle books. I almost for got about it. Thanks for the reminder.

My daughter is turning 5 next week, she has a shitload of books and her favorites are the Wizard of Oz series, I've been reading those to her almost nightly since she was 3.
She also likes the Shel Silverstein books like Where the Sidewalk Ends.
I've got her on the I See Sam books right to learn to read (http://www.iseesam.com/) I actually have my old set of those books from the early 70's that I used to learn to read myself.

MattO 01-23-2009 05:25 PM

Oh and my 2 year old loves Ulysses.

LeRoy 01-23-2009 05:54 PM

My girl is only 14 months. So we read "My First Words" :thumbsup:thumbsup

Peaches 01-23-2009 06:02 PM

Chronicles of Narnia. Good books at any age but I was around 12 when I started reading them :)

If the 7 year old is a girl, the Fancy Nancy books are cute. And you can never go wrong with Curious George or Dr. Suess, IMHO

Sarah, I just started reading the Twilight series today - so far, so good - worth it for a quick read even if it's geared towards teens :)

SmokeyTheBear 01-23-2009 06:12 PM

lock them in a room with homework and books, they will choose the books. You gotta make books the better choice of alternative things they could be doing.

p.s. make sure the chair isnt too comfy

PSSuperstars 01-23-2009 06:13 PM

All of the RL Stine Goosebump books. You can get them on Amazon used... for WAY WAY WAY cheap... I read them over and over and over when I was a little girl...

Also, like someone mentioned, The Babysitter's Club books... ADORE THEM.

For me, Twilight isn't for kids under 14/15. The sexual tension in book 1 is enough to make grown women swoon...

And like Loki also said.. random Scholastic books...
How To Eat Fried Worms
I'm Going To Be Famous
James and the Giant Peach

I was around 12 or so when I first read the Chronicles of Narnia and I loved them. I got my 12 year old niece and a friend of mine's 12 year old daughter into them as well and they both are loving them. I can highly recommend them for any kid that age.

Laurie 01-23-2009 07:04 PM

Magic Tree House series, anything by Roald Dahl,
