Obamas gonna close Guantanamo Bay ....hmmmm

Here comes the "change"

Obama meets with military advisors, orders closure of Guantanamo Bay

"Thursday he ordered the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention center an end to torture as an interrogation technique."

Without giving any thought or what to do with the detainees. He will figure something out though . . . right?

There's no shortage of fighters dude, and if these people ever had any information
that information changed 7 years ago.

We complained about Sadam's secret prisons/torture and shit but here were are trying to
out do him with the same shit.

The issue is this : if we are going to torture people too then don't use evil leader/torture
as a reason to liberate people.

This will help reverse our democracy from eroding into hypocrisy.

C'mon dude, you're smarter than that....why do you always make these straw man arguments? (Yeah, I'm sure that the President Obama gave no thought whatsoever to what to do with the prisoners.....he just unlocked the gates and said he'll figure something out later....pffffft.)

It'll be closed within a year and they've put a group together to look at all of the options concerning what to do with the prisoners before they close Gitmo.

It's not like they kicked them all out yesterday with $100 in pocket money and a bus ticket to the destination of their choice.

Babaganoosh 01-23-2009 12:55 PM

A lot of the detainees aren't even guilty of anything except not cooperating with the U.S.. Who can blame them for that? In their position I wouldn't cooperate either.

Republitards are circulating emails around right now with an argument to the effect of "do you want terrorists in prisons inside our contry?" Really? That's the best they can do? First, very few are actually "terrorists." They are uncooperative at best, maybe actual enemy combatants at worst. At any rate, most were just fighting the occupation of their country. Again, who can blame them for that?

The trash we have in our prisons right now are infinitely more dangerous than prisoners of war. Put a herd of Muhammeds in general population at Sing Sing and see what happens. Our homegrown bad guys are much worse than those detainees. When those detainees get out, they won't be released in the US. Our criminals will.

Are you saying that Obama should have just held him there until death just to avoid a lawsuit?

You would think that having Arab Muslims getting gang raped in the showers and/or shanked by some gangstas would be an appealing option to the people who want to hold them indefinitely without trial or charge or counsel.

Would be cheaper too, so the deficit hawks should jump on board as well.

so the first matter of business is to release suspected terrorists who when released go back to the battlefield and want to kill you -> http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/wo...er=rss&emc=rss

as well as open the US government up to frivolous lawsuits from these peices of shit -> http://cnnwire.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01...united-states/

Yes, releasing those who want to kill you is stupid. If he is truly a terrorist then he should be held. Whether at Guantanamo or not.

However holding someone who's never even been charged, much less found guilty, just because you're afraid he might sue you for it.... is well beyond moronic. And the fact that you think the possibility of a lawsuit is worth imprisoning a person for life is ok, tells me a lot about your mindset.

you guys are soooo OK with torture because you've never being in the receiving end. It's a horrible thing, and what Bush did by allowing prisoners or terrorism-suspects to be tortured was a terrible crime.
I'm not saying that these people are innocent. But torture is not the way!

Tell you what, enlighten me.

This guy is a terrorist by your account, yes? Deserves to be there, shouldn't be let out, right?

So what are you afraid of? His lawsuit should be an open and shut case, no? Hasn't got a chance of winning. Right??

So what's the big deal?

UNLESS..... you think he will win. Hmm...

Rangermoore 01-23-2009 01:49 PM

When are people going to learn that these scum bags do not have the same rights as all of us AMERICANS have. They get no court protection....Thats why I just shot them when I cought them in Iraq, that way they would never see the court system. but hey I helped them out by letting them meet their god sooner....

"we hold these truths to be self evident,
that all men are created equal and endowed
with certain unalienable rights by the creator."

i guess it's not as self evident as they thought.

you sir, are an enemy of the USA.

CIVMatt 01-23-2009 02:17 PM

All I've seen is that he's going to close the camps not the base... anyways I lived there for 5 years, be sad to see it go, I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into building that place

dyna mo 01-23-2009 02:18 PM

Gitmo is a symbol of torture- so the closure will be mostly symbolic. the whole point of housing detainees at Gitmo was to put them outside of the American legal system, a practice that was struck down by the Supreme Court when it ruled that detainees have habeus rights.

the Bush administration tried to walk around domestic and international principles of law, creating the “unlawful combatant” so that they could hide detainees from due process indefinitely and conduct kangaroo courts.

If they’d just stuck with the existing definitions, all the Gitmo detainees against whom they could build a real case under the actual rules of law, without torture and without rigging the courts, would have been tried...already. If found guilty, the death penalty would have been warranted in some cases.

Trying detainees won't appear legitimate unless we bring them under the American system, and if we do that some very bad men will go free.

But that is Bush's failing, not Obama's. This was inevitable the minute the Bush administration decided to authorize torture.

Lamis 01-23-2009 02:52 PM

Excellent. Bush convinced the world, to hate USA, during the last 10 years. Everywhere an American goes, he's hated, no matter what. Obama wants to change that.

Obama is acting to make the world happy with USA again, at the expenses of having 50% of the nazi population of USA (like Texas) hate him.

In short, the World and Democarts like people from California, will love all what he does. And nazis + republicans will be angry.

He closed all those illegal prisons where TORTURE was practiced on a daily basis and the Human Rights Watch was complaining every day. All those nazi-american soldiers will finish working at mcdonalds now, heh.

Go OBAMA Go!

True dat.

I gotta laugh when people say, "oh no..not on our soil!" If the suspected terrorists are in the Colorado Supermaxx, they may as well be on the moon. They ain't getting out, and nobody is going to get to them.

Shit, put them in Pelican Bay, Marion, etc., and those suspects might talk real quick. Who needs torture when you have gang rapes, beat downs, solitary confinement, rogue guards, and all the other shit inmates go through in some of our toughest prisons. Hell, they might be screaming, "send me back to Gitmo please!!"

I thought the same thing... child molesters last weeks, terrorists I would give a few days once the other inmates find out. Might be the simplest way of handling everything... let the natural pecking order of prisons take care of them.

I don't know. That one guy is going to file a lawsuit for being there for 6 years without being charged. That roblobotomy guy seems to think he has a shot at winning which would lead me to believe that he may be telling the truth.

Besides, for all the lies we've heard about WMD's, I have no doubt they'd lie about just about anything else if it meant getting info out of someone. :2 cents:
