Differences between Studio 8 and CS3 and the learning curve?

I've been advised by someone I may be working with on a non-adult project that I should learn the entire CS3 suite.

I was given a copy of CS3, but I have no books.

I have a very large book on Studio 8 that I never got around to using.....so my question is basically, would I be wasting my time going through the lessons in the Studio 8 book to learn Flash, Dreamweaver, and Contribute before moving on to the programs that CS3 has that Studio 8 doesn't....or are the programs alot different in CS3 and I need to learn them there?

I'm trying to save myself some money on books, but I also don't want to learn the hell out of Studio 8 and then be lost when I get to CS3.
