My appointment with the IRS lawyers today... Karma at its finest!

I've been dreading this appointment for months. I haven't filed my taxes in a LONG time. I know I have at least 50K that I owe but realistically more like 90-100K. I have penalties kicking my ass and accumulating like crazy. Most of my paperwork was destroyed recently and since I moved out of town, I've been procrastinating in regards to the IRS cuz I needed to catch up from losing everything as it was.

So fucking GET THIS! I get there early and I'm chain smoking cigs in my car and praying my ass off, please God just let this all go away. Let me at least get a reasonable payment arrangement but please don't screw me out of the little that I have left. I didn't think there would be any way in hell that I could get it reduced after so much time has went by and I know they don't give a rats ass about personal circumstance.

After doing the numbers (I'm still not clear on exactly how much I owe but the good news is that it doesn't matter) the guy tells me that I qualify for some "once per lifetime" deal where they just knock the whole fricking thing off. He didn't say "might" or "may". I kept asking if he was sure. He insisted the whole thing will get knocked off. I pay them like 6k and then the IRS like 2K and THAT'S IT!!!

100K to 2K BLAM!!!

I will have it all paid in full within a few days. Unreal isn't it!!! I can't stop crying. I feel like I got a part of my life back.

Just thought I'd share this inspirational IRS story as I know they're very rare. Nap time!

seeric 02-04-2009 01:59 PM

cool, im not filing or paying until they come after me.

can you tell me exactly how it went down and why?

icq pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

firecracker 02-04-2009 02:01 PM

I file every year. I kept all my records from like 1995...

Sosa 02-04-2009 02:03 PM

Wish I could get away with not paying taxes and get a discount like that in the end. I'd consider yourself way fucking lucky?!

CaptainHowdy 02-04-2009 02:05 PM

That must feel better than a multiple orgasm...

Broda 02-04-2009 02:05 PM

"I pay them like 6k and then the IRS like 2K and THAT'S IT!!!"

you pay whom 6k?

you sure you're not getting scammed? hehe

hope it all works out for you, for sure, if it's for real, that IS the deal of a lifetime!

Bake 02-04-2009 02:07 PM

Hey a nice GFY story
Glad it worked out for you.

IllTestYourGirls 02-04-2009 02:07 PM

One of my friends did that. He was getting fucked pretty hard by the IRS went to a lawyer paid them like 5 grand and the IRS a few k and it was done.

Nikki_Licks 02-04-2009 02:08 PM

I saw something on the news today that the IRS is Offering Leniency Plan For Taxpayers

Here is a link

Congrats on your luck with them, usually it turns into a nightmare :thumbsup

I think the IRS can only go back 3 years max from the time you've last paid your taxes. So if you are current with your taxes, they can only go back 3 years. That's what my CPA has told me. Taxes are no joke, you are lucky. For those who don't pay their taxes, your day will come and I hope they are gentle just like in this case.

webgurl 02-04-2009 02:09 PM

maybe you should get 2nd opinion , does sound kinda fishy the IRS is evil .
You wouldnt want the IRS to knock on your door 2-3yrs later and have this
haunt you again (i saw this happen on people's court with a faulty accountant before, who made a mistake on their clients tax report)

HorseShit 02-04-2009 02:10 PM

why wouldn't you just pay your taxes on time like a good girl?

BradM 02-04-2009 02:10 PM

I wouldn't believe 'em personally.

RRRED 02-04-2009 02:11 PM

They're going to file for me on the years that I didn't. Also they will fix anything at all that isn't finished up. It's all in the fee. I don't have to do anything at all.

I am on social security disability and when they did the numbers that the IRS would normally use to determine how much I can afford to pay, it worked out like my bills were more than my income. So they just labeled me as not being able to pay it.

The reason I say karma at its finest.... this summer me and my daughter were thrown out into the street by the ex, my car was severely vandalized and repo'd, I was robbed blind of every cent I had which I wasn't aware of since I was not doing the bills and things like that for a whole year, and anything I had that was worth anything was destroyed or stolen. (What a winner, eh?) So basically since summer, I've had absolutely nothing. I slept on the floor in my apartment for two months when I first got here. lol.

All of the hell and torment ended up turning around and helping me tremendously. I'm so grateful that I can rest now. I can finally breathe and heal.

Funny how things end up working themselves out as long as you are honest and don't hurt people. I do believe in that big time.

Woot!

Rrred,

Wow - what a mess you went through...

Hope all works out for you :)

You still up north?

Hugs

Todd

tranza 02-04-2009 02:21 PM

I'm glad you've caught a brake.

:)

RRRED 02-04-2009 02:22 PM

It's these guys http://jkharris.com/

Hi Todd! I moved out of town but not too far. Luckily I had an old friend that desperately needed a renter and I desperately needed a place so I got lucky there. All I had was the clothes on my back, a blanket, and a box of frigging ashes for the first two months.

BradM 02-04-2009 02:23 PM

jkharris is legit.

Congratulations

alias 02-04-2009 02:24 PM

Damn, best of luck.

notime 02-04-2009 02:29 PM

Jet - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-04-2009 02:29 PM

HorseShit 02-04-2009 02:30 PM

Good, good. I almost started to worry a bit there. I still can't believe this. I needed this break so badly.

One of the weird but cool things was that they will put me on a 5 year probation and I had to sign a contract with them to agree to let them do my taxes every year during that time. That way the IRS knows that they will get whatever is owed to them for the next 5 years at least.

I'm definitely cool with that. I can't wait to see what the amount really is. It could very well be way over 100K. What a relief.

Vexes 02-04-2009 02:36 PM

You should e-mail Obama, he may have a cabinet position for you.

HorseShit 02-04-2009 02:37 PM

unfortunate part is the IRS just read this thread and you owe it all again

It's called, "Offer and Compromise".

For me instead of 50k, I paid $9,000. You also have to pay your quarterlies, and all your taxes for like 3 or 5 years after accepting it. Otherwise, you revert back to what you owed.

So... make sure you file moving forward chief.

fris 02-04-2009 02:42 PM

you sure will smith wasnt the lawyer? :p

For personal income taxes, the Assessment Statute of Limitations is 3 years from the date the tax was originally assessed (usually when the taxes were filed), except in cases of fraud. If they can prove fraud, there is no limitation.

If I had known that doing that for this kind of break was possible, I actually would have. That's sad to say but I'll bet I'm not the only one on GFY who would.

I think the only thing that will show is that my lien will be gone and off of there! Another huge plus. I haven't had any way of borrowing money or getting a single credit card for years with that lien on there. I sure needed it lately too and I was just out of luck completely.

Juicy D. Links 02-04-2009 05:04 PM

MikeSmoke 02-04-2009 05:19 PM

Congrats Nicole...glad you finally got a break, and a big one :winkwink:

(I'm thinking about not paying my mortgage, so that I can qualify for whatever breaks they eventually come up with for people in danger of default :winkwink: )

WiredGuy 02-04-2009 05:20 PM

So why am I being a sucker and paying my taxes? I'll just let it roll and get a once in a lifetime bailout and just resume paying once i get forgiven.

how exactly were you honest? you cheated the govt. out of money you owed.

you = white trash.

st0ned 02-04-2009 05:45 PM

Care to elaborate? I am VERY interested in how this happened. I owe the IRS 70-80k that I have to take care of in the coming weeks and had thought about calling one of those places that say they can get it down to a fraction of the overall owed.

Congratulations, I can imagine that is a HUGE burden lifted off of your shoulders. I only wish that I could have the same results.

RRRED 02-04-2009 05:53 PM

Actually most of it is penalties from making too much money years ago and then my income took a sudden drop. Up until sometime in 07, I had a solid payment plan in place. I never dodged the IRS. I tried as hard as I could to catch up. Then I got hit with a horrific personal tragedy and loss that kept me from doing basically anything let alone dealing with the IRS. That tragedy costed me my job as well.

After a very expensive divorce years ago, we sold out land and every cent went straight to the IRS. Every chance I have had extra, I have given all of it straight to them. They do know this.

I went in today will full intention of paying every cent and just setting up some sort of payment plan and to have them negotiate with the IRS to see if they could ease up on the penalties because my current situation is so very different than in recent years. This was a TOTAL shock to me.

I love the scent of a few haters though... *whiff... thank you veddy much :)
