what is with "congrats" when someone says they are having a kid?
didn't want to rain on anyone's parade in any specific thread, but I never understood the concept of congratulating people for having kids, like its a great accomplishment that their sperm managed to swim up and latch on some female's egg.... and now they are faced with a lifetime of burden and loss of freedom.... really when you think about it, any dumbass piece of trailer trash can throw open her legs and end up pooping out a bunch of rugrats, what is the accomplishment in that that should be congratulated?
Anyways, freedom is something that one should protect and value above any other, and having kids is the antithesis of freedom...... I dread the concept and would totally resent that burden for all time (but I also accept the possibility that freedom isn't that important to some people so if they choose to give that up that is their choice as well, but it just seems odd to me to congratulate someone for that.... it makes more sense to congratulate all of those that aren't having kids, like "Congrats dude, another year with your freedom and no burdens!" :1orglaugh) |
Breeding is irresponsible at this point. Overpopulation threatens the entire planet.
It's even worse when morons breed. Humanity doesn't stand a fucking chance. Enjoy while you can. |
I couldn't agree more.

yea, you are right, doesn't make sense to me either...

This one I can deal with now that I have a kid of my own.
Offering congrats on the "I hit 13k Posts" threads it what I don't get after all these years. |
I guess maybe most of the congrats come from those that are already burdened, and it is kind of a "welcome to our world" kind of thing, where they are now in the situation they are in, so the more they tell themselves that it is good then it is like a positive thinking thing, where you can put a good slant on anything just by repeating it enough.... and maybe it is a misery loves company kind of thing going on too, I dunno, makes sense to them I guess :1orglaugh

I think it's because there is lack of a better term... I've never understood it as a congrats "you did a great job" but as a congrats "I'm happy for you".
|
I still have freedom, with 1 child. I freely gave some of my so called freedom to gorw up and become better then I was before being a parent.

Because it's what people do,some people view that as a blessing

marriage is basically a contract that you are signing, that after your partner makes your life so miserable that you finally dump her, she gets half of everything you own, and maybe more after that :1orglaugh seeing how contracts tend to go when things go wrong (like read up on some people with hosting contracts that come back to haunt them years after), I think it is pretty smart to be very very careful of signing any kind of contract and making sure that it is really really worth it to you ( and realize that what you think is worth it to you today... your mind might change drastically in a year or two) |

I say congrats to people who are happy to be expecting a child.
It may not be for you and thats just fine, but for many having a child is a wonderful event with pluses that far outweigh the negatives. Its not for everyone, but why not be happy for those who are happy about it? |
