iPhone Freaks/Programmers: What to do to make videos playable on websites and iPhone?

i try to encode and set up videos in a way that they can be viewed on websites and on the iPhone without having streaming problems. has anyone done this successfully? if so: please help me!!! :helpme

it somehow needs a player script that does progressive streaming with mp4 files and works in normal webbrowsers and on the iPhone

m4v or mp4 (same thing). Looks like you can stream and sync just fine. ffmpeg ftw

pornhub knows how it works... should be easily doable using m4v.. here is a bump

I think most iphone videos are H-264 mpg-4 encodings

It's actually pretty easy. The encoding has to be pretty specific.

Formats include:

Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.


As for embedding it in the page so it's streamable, you have to <embed></embed> it.

Or, you can just link to .3gp videos. Works, too. Tube8.com does this when the video page is accessed with an iPhone. Use the UserAgentSwitcher addon for firefox to see.

it's much better to make a useragent script or doctype system that simply switches to a dumbed down version of your site if the person is on a cell phone.

like with pornhub, even google does the same thing.

this sound pretty good. my videos are already ok, i know that. i am now trying the embed tag :thumbsup
