That's what happens when you elect this guy to be your governor:

I just don't understand how Californians vote. It is crazy. They pass all these crazy initiatives, elect a dumb a$$ as their governor, and then they wonder what happened?

5% income tax?? Ouch.

I'm sure glad I don't live in Cali, 5% would hurt for sure...

Typo...my bad. I assume they are increasing income tax by 5%? What is the current Cali income tax?

Regardless, I live in a state without any income tax, so I'd hate even a 1% income tax.

Kard63 02-14-2009 12:05 PM

California should be broken up into different states. The normal people shouldn't have to subsidize the liberal sense of self entitlement held by the rest.

republicans hahahahaha!!!

babebuns 02-14-2009 12:10 PM

Haha, you guys are complaining about a 5% income tax? Try living in Europe. 22% in the UK if you earn under £34,600, more than that it's 40%, then you pay national insurance ontop of that.

They are upping the income tax 5% more.

They are also upping sales tax 1% more,
Gas by 12 cents a gallon
And vehicle license fee.

They are trying to bankrupt the middle class.

Quote:

The plan would increase the sales tax by one cent on the dollar, the gas tax by 12 cents a gallon, and the vehicle license fee from 0.65 percent of a car's value to 1.15 percent.

So fucked in good times they piss away all the excess tax revenues and then in bad times they raise taxes.

Wish I could run my business like that.

Blaming it on any one person doesn't make much sense, though it is common for the "man in charge" to take blame when things are bad and get credit when things are good, regardless of what they did or did not do. Arnold was also governor during the California housing boom... so do we give him credit for that or blame him for the current situation? Whichever is last I guess.

California's problem is they depended so much on property value and real estate for income that when it collapsed they simply did not have the money to pay for all of its advanced social programs. Social programs cost money, a lot of it, it needs to come somewhere. They lost one revenue stream, they need to either find another revenue stream or cut some of the programs. Cutting programs is not going to happen... too many people that vote are dependent on them... so taxes go up.

That's how it starts. Every spending program gets money from somewhere, typically taxes, and when things get good again the taxes don't go away. Remember that when you vote.

Actually sales tax should be going up closer to 2% and not 1% - news sites are sort of funny.
The gas tax does suck especially since we already pay a shit load in gas tax as it is.
Vehicle license fee is not the worst thing in the world. Happens to be the one I object the least about.

There really is no middle class to bankrupt and I am not sure who "they" are. Perhaps I would understand more if I know who "they" are and all.

Damn. How much are NY State's taxes?

They are the Cali state legislature

digitaldivas 02-14-2009 03:43 PM

everything in Cali is going up. Even the yummy combo meals at fat burger are like 9 bucks now, jeez louise

baddog 02-14-2009 03:47 PM

.12 a gallon on gas sucks . . . guess more Harley time and less Charger time.

Yes they are all of the problem and they provide nothing.

Dumbass.

pocketkangaroo 02-14-2009 04:10 PM

Their problem is that the Federal Government mooches off them. They get back $0.78 for every $1 they pay in to the federal government. Close that gap and they are fine.

Actually, California's deficit was already staggering and had led to major problems way before the real estate collapse. It just was deferred from year to year by accounting tricks and bonds until it got so big that it couldn't be "hidden" any longer.

billyb 02-14-2009 05:21 PM

As a Californian, I blame my fellow citizens for electing all of these idiots!. It is the same for the people we elect to the house and the senate. These so called politicians have screwed us all.

This country is in very big trouble, we have spent way more than we take in. We have to many people that do not contribute anything and live off of society. We have to many social programs that we can not pay for, we have them because the people on them will always vote for more programs.

California has been losing businesses here left and right, it is to expensive here. This bill will only have more businesses leave again. That is a nice way to bring in more revenue to your state to fund all of this, good look with that when you drive people out of your state.

It's a big mistake to think the UK pays more tax than in the USA, its a mistake i made when i first moved here 14 years ago. First you have State tax then Federal. The State board of Equalization adds around 8% to each purchase you make. Then you come to the hidden taxes, taxes that people who don't live here hardly hear about. First you have property tax. I pay around $20,000.00 tax annually for my house in California ( 4 bedroom 3 bath 4 garage, not much land ) A house I own in Wimbledon London. 7 bedrooms and lots of land cost me just a little over £2,000 a year ($3,245.00) See the difference?

Then if you own a business the fun really starts. In Cali they tax you for every little thing. Replace an awning on a restaurant $5,000 for a permit( plus they add that value to the landlords property tax as an improvement ) . Then you have business license, the ABC tax ( liquor license tax) Health inspection tax $550.00 per year ( you pay the health department to come inspect your business ???) The list goes on and on. I made the mistake of thinking its way cheaper to live in the USA than in London , believe me it's not. with all the hidden taxes i think we are on par or pay slightly more than the UK in Taxes:helpme

Fuck, I would love to live in Orange County one day...nice place. What kind of income do you need to live out there?

Jakez 02-14-2009 06:44 PM

Why complain so much where there are plenty of other places to live? I love Cali because in my eyes it seems like they actually cater to the way the average person would like to live and they don't just follow along with every other state. It's truely a unique place to be and if you don't like it then just find a place that better suits you?

tony286 02-14-2009 06:45 PM

Remember when Warren Buffet was Arnold's financial advisor during the first run for governor? He said the problem was real estate taxes are too cheap. He paid more in real estate tax for his 500k home in the midwest than his 16 million dollar malibu home. He wasnt around for long after that.

Was in Cali last October and loved it, laid back lifestyle, warm weather, and palm trees. Plus my sister-inlaw is in Rodando Beach. In NYC we are rushing to die and high stress levels here. For Example some guy cut me off driving...just to beat me to a red light...fucking nuckleheads here. It is also very expensive, but irronicly NYC has really low property taxes...suberbs you need to have money though. If my family was not here I would relocate fast to a warm place. If I were to move to another country it would be Japan for sure.
