Tooth problems suck.

I had some neck issues the last couple of weeks and finally had the pain migrate to my jaw last weekend. On Monday it was hurting bad so I go to the dentist and find out my problem is that a tooth that I got a filling in when I was a kid (probably around 13-14, I'm now 37) has cracked. The top of the tooth had a new cavity in it and it had damaged the nerve and caused an infection.

My options were:
1. Root canal with a build up and cap. This would require 2-3 trips depending on how involved the root canal was going to get.

2. get the tooth pulled and eventually I will have to get a bridge put in.

I went with option number 2. They told me #1 wasn't a guarantee and that it may not heal correctly and end up getting pulled anyway (even though there was only a 10-15% chance of that) and I didn't want to end up going through all that crap. The tooth is in the back so you can't see it so I didn't care and had them pull it.

I've spent much of this week in a vicoden haze, but the pain is gone.

It is amazing how a little thing like a tooth can shut you down.

I hear ya. Been there. Molar problem.

But, eye infections are the worst. Got one since yesterday. Antibiotic drops, intense itch, cloudy vision... it's a bitch. Amazing how much we take our vision for granted.

I'm scheduled for my first root canal this tuesday. It's going to be four treatments and cost me $600 (the rest is co pay thru insurance). I'm pretty scared about all the pain that will ensue. Will I need vicodin for a root canal? Is this a fair price? Just curious

the only thing that hurts is trying to chew on that side while healing. the procedure is painless after the initial 2 shots.

Had a similar problem about 3 months ago. Between the sickness from the infection to the oral surgery it has me out of commission for about 2 weeks.

Ohh I am sory to read that. I have a tooth that has a cavity on the side of it. I have no idea what they are going to do to it. Hopefully not have to pull it. :(

Tooth pain will bring even the toughest motherfuckers to their knees...dude I knew actually got an infection in a tooth, but he just ignored it...spread to his brain and killed him.

yes, i have heard of that also, serious shit

also most people don't know this, but flossing and extra good dental hygiene lowers your risk of heart disease like 25% or more

Your mouth is full of bacteria that can kill you. Especially old people or people that have recently had heart surgery or bone related surgeries like a knee replacement or broken bone are most susceptible.

This is why the dentist asks you if you have had any of these operations before they clean your teeth. (so much bacteria being unleashed during that process) can kill some people.

They usually will have these people premedicate with antibiotics beforehand.

My mom was a DA when I was a kid so I was like brainwashed from an early age.

Here is what I can tell you from what I experienced and was told. If I had gone with the root canal option it would have cost me around $1000 for the procedure and another $1400 in a few weeks for the build up and cap. You may not need the cap, I would have had to have it because my tooth had split down the center where my old filing was and the cap would have been the only way to save it. They told me that Vicodin would have helped me with the pain and it really did help me the day before the extraction and since.

For me the pain after the extraction wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I was sore and it hurt the first day, but after that it seemed to get better fast. Today is day 5 after the extraction and there is only a tiny bit of swelling and the soreness and pain is almost gone (I only get pain for a few minutes after I eat something.)

As for you, I think the pain will be determined by how involved your root canal is. I have one friend who had one done and said it was no big deal and hardly hurt afterward. Another friend got one and said it sucked and took her out of commission for 2 days afterward. If it helps the guy who had the root canal that said it was no big deal had it done on a molar while the girl who was laid up with it for a couple of days and said it sucked bad had it done on a front tooth.

I hope that gives you some idea of if you are getting a good deal or not and what you may be in for.

Mine actually showed itself as a neck ache. I had a really sore neck and had no real tooth pain. At first I though I must have just slept funny or something or somehow strained my neck. It started feeling better then would get worse. I had decided if it didn't get better in a day or two I was going to go see the doctor to make sure everything was okay.

The next morning my tooth started aching and within 24 hours the tooth pain was unbearable. The neck pain was gone and that was when I found out I had the infection in the tooth. It is a bottom tooth near the back and the infection was causing the pain to go into my neck and not my jaw - at least at first. But he told me the same thing. Had I not treated it I could have been in some serious trouble.
