The cellphone is the new tit.

I just got home from seeing a movie and I know I have seen this before, but it never really occurred to me until seeing it happen today.

People shuffle into the movie theater and the last thing they do is shut off their cell phone. They text and talk right up until they are lowering the lights and playing the warnings to shut your phone off. The movie gets over and the lights come back up and people aren't out of their seats before they are turning the phone on so they can talk and text and see if they missed any calls.

As everyone walks to the door it seems like half the crowd is looking down at their phones. It reminded me of a little of puppies that can't be separated from their moms tit for more than a few minutes.

Have we collapsed so much as a society that we can't go a few hours without the constant reassurance of a phone call or a text message? Do we really have to walk through the store wearing a blue tooth headset so we can talk while we shop like we are Gordon Fucking Gekko trying to close a multi-million dollar deal?

I have always said I am a simple guy in a complex world, but until to day I never fully realized how true it is and how sad it makes me.

Sorry for the rant. . .

Now back to using some of the modern technology we all love to show boobs to people in exchange for money :)

I remember you called someone and no one answered the phone(pre voice mail). It was like they arent home I will try later. Now someone doesnt answer the phone its like where can they be, why arent they answering its crazy.

I wouldnt call cell phones a collapse of society it's just a new way of doing things.

What was better...

A: People milling out of a theater saying nothing?
B: People milling out of theater setting up what ever they are doing next?

What about people in the mall buying things on the cell phone, nothing worse than buying the wrong size for someone you are shopping for, or snapping a pick of something and see what thier friends think, or even girl friends for that matter?

I just do not like it when the fuckers are driving while on a phone or doing something that can potentially hurt others.

I'm not saying they are not without their uses. I have one. I don't have a regular home phone. It just has occurred to me that there are a lot of people who simple don't seem to be able to function without it and most of what they are saying/doing is useless.

Yeah I was recently at a movie and saw about 20 or so cell phones brightly lit before the movie started as well. Cell phones are great for emergencies, getting rides, asking for directions when lost, etc, but you're right, society is getting hooked on them.

I think the OP is referring to the girl or guy who can't stop texting in the fear that they aren't "in the loop" or up to date with EVERYTHING. My brother is pretty bad for this, he's 17 years old and has a blackberry for some reason with an insane monthly bill. It's his choice, whatever right?

As long as they don't do it while driving I couldn't care less what they do in their spare time; because I know better than to waste it on useless conversation.

I often don't take my phone with me when I go places. I don't take it to the grocery store or things like that. I have friends that will call me and the fact that they can't get directly a hold of me pisses them off. They will leave me sarcastic messages like, "What is the point of having a cell phone if you don't take it anywhere?"

It cracks me up.

exactly. My brother's daughter has a cell phone and sends 5K texts a month. I never see her not on it. They have to tell her to put it away at dinner time or she will text through dinner. Same with another friend of mine's 15 year old. there is not a time when she doesn't have her I Phone and listening to music and texting at the same time. You can't have a conversation with her. And people wonder why kids have ADD.

TyroneGoldberg 02-16-2009 09:07 PM

The collapse in society is that we as a people have become accustomed to faceless interaction with each other and as a result have forsaken human bonding.

Seems like it was eons ago when people would gather and spend time together as active participants in enjoying each others company and conversation, whereas today, we are passive in nature and reliant on tools that have created a generation of lazy and complacent.

Imagine the world of past where nothing could be accomplished without physical interaction. You had to actually leave your home to accomplish anything at all.

Not so today.. You can stay home 24/7 so long as you have your phone and your internet.. You can work, buy stuff, pay bills, do your banking, pretty much anything and everything, without ever leaving your home or ever physically interacting with another human being ever.

I was talking to a co worker the other day about the fact that I DON'T HAVE A CELLPHONE and she looked at me like I was from another century.... yeah the one where they didn't have flushing toilets either.

I will give you a true story though.... I was waiting at this intersection at a lighted section, I of course, waiting at the red light. Light changes to green and I see this car come for the intersection and doesn't even attempt to slow down... I hit the brakes and he blows right on through... left to right... if he had of hit me, it would be a t-bone on the driver side door...and I know i'd be in the hospital or worse.

Now had a been on a cell phone at the time... i'd be dead today and I know it... he blew through the intersection at full speed.

Anyways, cell phones are nice and all, but I don't really need one. Like I always say... "If it's THAT important... they will get a hold of me later or leave a message...."

WinstonTriplexcash 02-16-2009 11:26 PM

A lot of the types I see are at opposite ends of the spectrum of cel phone usage. Im a moderate cel phone user. I have no problem with people carrying their phones with them everywhere -but for God's sake, go to some corner once you've picked up and decided to talk for a while. I can't stand other people's extended conversations.

I like my cel phone cause it keeps me connected to my kids.

I fucking hate cellphones. I hate looking around me and seeing everyone staring into theirs.

gornyhuy 02-17-2009 07:59 AM

Great time for an underground jammer sale!

buyandsell 02-17-2009 08:06 AM

people need to stop talking on the phone and driving

StuartD 02-17-2009 08:09 AM

Yup, they did a poll and found out that for most people, the first thing they do in the morning when they wake up is check their cell phone.

I guess it's a good thing in that it would help to boost self esteem... that they're so important that they turn off their phone for a few hours and the whole world needs them.

But still, it's very annoying.

I went to a movie a couple nights ago and one guy actually received a phone call during the movie. Boy did the rest of the crowd let him know how they felt! :1orglaugh

John-ACWM 02-17-2009 08:22 AM
