Offshore Powerboat racing from a helicopter and I've got video
 

I dug up this old video I shot at the 1994 Offshore Powerboat World championships in Key West Florida and made a short video for youtube.
There was a race on Wednesday and I rode in a helicopter for that and then sat on a boat for Sundays race.

They took the doors of the helicopter and I put on a harness so I could move about and hang out the door if needed.
Flying low along side the race boats at about 150 mph is probably the coolest thing I've ever done.

Back then I had a Panasonic Prosumer VHS camera that I bought around 1990 and it was the kind you rest on your shoulder and look through a little B&W viewfinder. It was hard shooting out the side I was sitting on and a lot better shooting out the other side as I was protected by the wind. It would have been nice to have something to muffle the sound of the wind so the engines could be heard. Looking at it now I cringe at the quality and sure wish I could do it again with the equipment I have today.

I also took still pictures and doing double duty was a handful. The back of the helicopter is nothing more than a bench seat with no doors and I had one camera in my lap while using the other and my camera bag between my feet and the whole time I felt like one bank turn by the pilot and I would slide out the side :upsidedow

I've been to races in Key West, Marathon, Miami Beach, Cocoa beach, Jacksonville and Ft. Myers but I've never made it to the sarasota one.

I've heard the city puts on a great event :thumbsup
