You don't have a cooler yet? I am surprised it lasted this long, I usually get 2 yrs max out of one before it needs a cooler.

Get a aluminum topped one not plastic!

Sounds like its on the way out. 5 years tho is a nice return from a laptop. My younger brother has to buy a new one every single year without fail. He's on his fourth laptop in 3 calendar years.

I'm bought a new Dell XPS in September and its excellent. Couldnt recommend it highly enough. A friend just bought one last week too. I got my girlfriend one a year ago, the 13 inch version of mine and she loves it. Gonna pick up a smaller one like my girlfriends for travelling.

its a gateway and I cant complain never had a problem with it. I have taken it on the road with me and its held up well. When it goes I may go to 17 inch more of a desktop replacement.

i think its time to change it...

Could be the CPU fan bearings going, or it could just be a build up of dust. Give the vent a good squirt with a can of compressed air.

Also, are you running exactly the same OS now as you were 5 years ago...?

Its loud? Do you remember what kind it is? The ones I have I got at Circuit City it was the only brand they carried and sometimes I would have to go to a couple different stores to find it. It is packed away at the moment or I would look, but it is quiet as a mouse and only cost me $40.

Until I got this Gateway I had always ran a cooler. The laptop I am on now, even with duo processors doesn't get that hot but they do have sleep issues so do not put it in a bag without shutting it down, even if it is for just a short trip. It will overheat really fast.

And yes the 17" is nice! ;)

Yep that's probably why it's getting hotter. Just switching out the fans and getting rid of the dust inside should fix it.

candyflip 02-22-2009 10:26 AM

Heating up could just be something as small as dust buildup.

baddog 02-22-2009 10:44 AM

Five laptop years is like seven dog years.

Killswitch - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-22-2009 11:03 AM

Clean it out, I've been running the same computer for about 6 years, it starts to run loud and seem to over heat, I just rip it open and blast it with the air pump and it's good to go again.

dial 02-22-2009 11:18 AM

cleaning it out is the obvious answer, but being that tony is captain obvious you might have to tell him 5 or 6 times

I clean my laptops out like once every 6 months, if not sooner, he probably never has opened his up

itx 02-22-2009 12:43 PM

maybe is time to change it

last time I tried such a thing, it really did die 3 mins. later.
back-up all stuff and get a new one :2 cents:

LiveDose 02-22-2009 04:45 PM

I blow mine out and take it apart almost weekly. It's amazing what gets caught up in there...

tony286 02-22-2009 05:33 PM

Ive blown it out before when I get home from my trip. I will have to take it apart and have a look. I will save everything I want on it just in case I kill it.
