How reliable are cookie based redirects?

Meaning directing a surfer to a page based on a cookie you set prior?

a) is this a first-party cookie?
b) what method are you using for redirect?

Avoid it. The new generation of web browsers are geared towards anonymous browsing or 1 time use browsing. You won't want to depend solely on cookies once IE8 comes out.

I don't think so, I use them for mobile all the time, It's great to save the User Agent then redirect based on the best markup.

my point is programs like avs convert etc that allow affiliates, they have you make your surfers download the free trials, when the guy buys the app he clicks on a link in the software and it opens a webpage, its all based on cookies

tons of money is made promoting software trial downloads, they all rely on cookies, dont they use this type of system?
