Anyone use the Internet for storage?

Does anyone have any advice for storing files on the internet. I usually take all my files and move them to an external hard drive...then take that drive and leave it at my moms house for safety...in case of fire or theft. Any opinions? I want to start using an online storage service, but how secure are these things.

I saw a commercial last night for Mozy backup

I really don't trust to put stuff online. I guess it could be a good redundant backup though.

Why don't you purchase a few external drives and make duplicate copies of them? That's what I do. If you go for the internet storage, make sure that the storage site accepts adult content....if that's what your going to be storing. It wouldn't be a good thing to log in one day to find all of your stuff deleted due to a terms of service violation. :(

Again, I would stick with the external drives option but it's up to you.

I put some stuff on my server and some on my external HD. Nothing important though, so if this HD dies I'm fucked.

i could still suggest to have your harddrive backup file... or get your safety deposit account...

It has become a pain in the ass, it seems every time I travel I am buying another external hard drive...and burning about 50 data cds of files. I really only care about stuff that I have taken like photos and website templates. Over the last 10 years I must have downloaded over a million photos...and I realize I don't even look at them.

I am waiting to see how googles Gdrive works, you will be able to store your desktop files...and be able to access them from any computer.

Mozy looks good...
know some folks that are using it...
but only for smaller amount of files...

gmail / gdrive is good for that

All my shit takes just too much space for internet-based backup, so for now I use external drives and think of buying a blu-ray recorder. This should last for a while then.

External drives are a far better idea.
Look at all the data bases hacked these days Visa etc,
I would just keep up with the route you go now.
Plus there is no promise the company would not vanish on you with all you files.

get a VPS somewhere and use it as a storage server

Best will be to get dedicated server for lets say 100$ and that's it.
