Research study: social network users don't click ads that much
Even with all the "targeted conversations" and other ad targeting schemes tried by social network sites, click through rates aren't very good:
- 62 percent of Gen Y?s have visited a brand or fan page on a social network, but only 48 percent have joined - 84 percent noticed ads on social networks, 74 percent say they click infrequently/never (36 percent saying they don?t click on ads at all). - Only 19 percent say they find ads on social networks relevant. - 51 percent say they?d prefer a separate social network to manage their brand interactions. we have tons of impressions on facebook for our coffee thing and the clicks are super-duper low. on the other hand, our facebook application is effective.

I can gurantee you that in the old days of magazine or newspaper ads if you got a 1% repsonse rate that would considered a "success".

every social-freak ive watched/viewed their surfing habits, they skip over ads very often especially on sites like mysapce and facebook where the ads are in the same spots all the time, its not new people eyes get used to banner zones and begin ignoring them, just like gfy.

I guess it's got to be interactive to work with web2 sites....
Brands should be getting profiles, running competitions and offers not slapping up banners and hoping they'll be clicked. People go there to have fun, to network, not to have advertising thrown at them so anything going up there really has to grab their interest, entertain if there's any hope of it being effective. Those ads that make you watch for 15 seconds before taking you to the page you want, i see them on so many mainstream sites....HOW ANNOYING?!! I don't think I've ever clicked one of those ads, always opt for 'skip' if it's available. I thought porn was bad with the adverts and pops til i began checking out mainstream entertainment sites, don't know how the surfers can stand all the intrusive advertising |
