Hackers Crack Itunes gift card algorithm

Hackers have cracked the algorithm that Apple uses to generate its gift cards for iTunes and a key generator has been made for it. Chinese site Taobao is selling them for less than 3% of their face value.

Chinese market researcher Outdustry has confirmed that the fake gift cards do indeed work by buying one and were able to add it to an iTunes account. You can get $200 cards for about US$2.60.

How Apple is going to address this will be troublesome. Changing the algorithm that generates the cards could render existing cards as unusable. Rendering all cards that are for sale and have been sold useless could be a huge marketing blunder for Apple, even if they promise to let people exchange them for new ones at a retail store.

How ballsy to just set up shop and start selling them like that. The chinese do not seem too worried about US or even international law.

Whaaaaaat? You mean when the US passes laws like 2257 other countries are not obligated to obey them?

bbobby86 03-11-2009 07:50 AM

go china hackers...

candyflip 03-11-2009 07:50 AM

So $100 spent would net you close to $8k in iTunes cash.

Sosa 03-11-2009 08:09 AM

Haha, +1 for the hackers

potter 03-11-2009 08:44 AM

damn, and there's like no way for itunes to stop this. they'd have to cancel all cards under that algorithm which would hurt millions of actual customers.

Kenny B! 03-11-2009 08:45 AM

the hackers were funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation lol

seeandsee 03-11-2009 08:46 AM

They could set a data file for legit cards and compare the numbers before they approve the sale? Seems like a fix could be set up in a few hours.

How is Apple going to have access to such info?

And does iTunes require you to verify your identity to spend a gift card there?

Apple is screwed unless they start tracking codes that have been sold, and that could take a long time to implement since retail stores will have to communicate with Apple when the cards are sold.

montel 03-11-2009 10:51 AM

so its free to get music now online?

Honestly I havent a clue and not afraid to admit it, lol. But it seems in an international fraud incident, that perhaps someone could have the info.

Then again maybe we should just applaud china for using a creative means to recoup some of the trillions we owe them, hehe
:error

fris 03-11-2009 12:26 PM

How will they tell the real ones apart from the fake ones since they are both generated?

JD 03-11-2009 01:43 PM
