The US is a Republic. The founders were quite clear about this, because they feared "mob rule" and the "tyranny of the majority" that has historically characterized democracies. In fact, nowhere in the constitution of the US, nor in any state constitution, is the word "democracy" used.

The US's founding fathers actually wanted a single party system as they viewed Britain's system as broken, constantly fighting and bickering, getting nothing done at all except slander each other. Their goal was to just have a government, and it's people.

Technically, they wanted a "no party" system.

They felt that partisan politics was too divisive and it would be better to have an actual person's name on the ballot as opposed to voting for a party.
