SEO - Google not counting back links

I tried to see how many back links I have on some of my sites by searching on google:

link:mysite.com

But it shows very little results, like 10-15 sites that are linking back, but I know for a fact that there are 100's of back links. Try to do this search for your sites, you will probably be surprised by a low results. Any reason why google is ignoring so many sites with back links?

Anyone have a theory why that is?

Could you imagine how many sites would be in that search result for a top 100 site?

I think that might be your answer.

Usually to me it seems to be the most recent one's that show in google.

it only shows the ones it sees as very valuable, check yahoo if you want to see all your backlinks.

Google is trying to keep each site owner's own privacy and also to keep its name on top. That's why they show links, but they only show a few...

If you want to track your links, the best solution is to put the Google meta tag from Webmaster Tools into your site's html.

it doesn't mean "google is not counting back links" - it means they aren't showing them all... and its totally meaningless.

go to yahoo and use this to search, it takes out your own sites links that are showing up

linkdomain:yourdomain.com -site:yourdomain.com

Try this on google and see what happens:
link:www.domain.+com
